    POSITION SUMMARY:


    The SIMES Financial Analyst is a member of the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences (SIMES), a joint institute of Stanford University and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

    The Financial Analyst reports to the Associate Director, SIMES, and is responsible for managing a $20 million annual budget by implementing, developing and maintaining accounting programs and procedures in conjunction with SLAC and Stanford enterprise-wide financial systems.

    The Financial Analyst performs complex finance functions and activities to ensure the full range of financial support of laboratory scientific and management operations.

    This requires advanced technical and professional expertise, and knowledge of SLAC and Stanford University policies, systems and external DOE regulations.

    This position works independently, with financial authority for SIMES / SLAC Division of Materials Science.

    You will have the opportunity to apply a variety of skills ranging from providing financial analysis related to the preparation of proposals and budgets, approving and monitoring expenses, analyzing and translating financial results into accurate forecast and business drivers, analyzing and managing service center cost and recovery, procurement subcontracts, evaluating controls and compliance with government accounting requirements, and supporting improvement of the Lab's processes.

    You will also provide management decision support using PeopleSoft, Workday Adaptive, MicroStrategy, SQL, and Excel-based tools.
    The successful candidate will possess prior experience in grant development, financial accounting, and/or federal policy analysis and compliance. A candidate's motivation to learn and grow will have an impact on their success in the job.

    The successful candidate will have a collaborative mindset and demonstrate eagerness to work with academic, scientific, and administrative personnel from a wide variety of functions in order to contribute to SIMES' mission of research impact and operational excellence.


    CORE DUTIES:

    Perform and design adhoc analyses of large complex data sets:

    reconcile complex accounts. Identify and resolve complex issues which may span multiple areas.
    Construct and assemble data for budgeting and decision making; develop conclusions, and present high level summary of recommendations. May develop annual budget for individual department/unit.
    Conduct analysis and resolution, and recognize exceptions.

    Participate in developing solutions that may require policy changes or the development of new processes; maintain broader organizational perspective in decision making.

    Execute internal control programs established by management, research new regulations, and recommend and implement approved changes. May manage compliance program for area of responsibility, and create complex compliance reports.
    Develop reports and presentations of complex financial data and metrics for management and third parties.
    Participate as a member of a project team; support new initiatives. Make decisions determining approach to managing and completing processes.
    Contribute to unit and organization strategy; assist in the development of change management plans and materials as needed.
    Develop and maintain desktop procedures and process documentation for area of responsibility.
    Define requirements, develop and implement complex test cases, perform system testing and analyze results.
    Participate in critical analysis of existing systems and processes, and identify opportunities for process improvement.

    Provide consulting advice to client group(s); serve as a resource on matters that require specific technical, financial, or subject matter expertise; support negotiations with external partners.

    May supervise, train, coach, and review the work of other staff, as needed. Contribute primarily through applying individual expertise.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Education & Experience:

    Bachelor's degree and four years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
    Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems; internet and computer literacy.
    Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

    Strong communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences and client groups.

    Demonstrated project management skills and ability to contribute to or lead part of a multifunctional team.

    Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork.
    Occasionally stand/walk, lift/carry objects weighing 11-20 pounds.

    At Stanford University, base pay represents only one aspect of the comprehensive rewards package.     The expected pay range for this position is $89,000 to $118,000 per annum/hour.

    The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
