    Position Summary


    SUNY Geneseo invites applications for two open Academic Advisor and Success Coach positions in the Office of Academic Planning and Advising.


    The Academic Advisor and Success Coach ( AASC ) plays a key role in Geneseo's academic advising and student support system.

    As advising specialists in a general sense, AASCs support our university-wide population of approximately 4,200 students.

    In providing this support, the AASC team works in partnership with faculty and other staff members in support of developmental advising, guiding and supporting all students throughout their program of study.

    Required Qualifications


    Required Qualifications :
    Bachelor's degree required by time of appointment

    Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds;

    Excellent written and oral communication skills with a proven ability to interact effectively and professional with students, faculty, families, and administrators from diverse backgrounds;

    Proficient in computer skills including, but not limited to: MSOffice, Google Suite, email, and ability to learn web-based advising applications (Banner), academic planning applications (DegreeWorks), course management applications (Brightspace), and early alert systems ( EAB Navigate);

    Experience working effectively with different communication styles, including proficient use of learning technologies and other applications;

    A willingness to respect and actively support the values, goals, mission, and vision of SUNY Geneseo

    Preferred Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in higher education, students affairs, or counseling;

    Proficiency in a second language

    ADVISING STUDENTS
    Provide academic coaching/advising to new cohort of approximately 250 students each year and continue to support the cohort through their sophomore year

    Reach out to various student populations to support and engage their transition to becoming Geneseo students, with sensitivity around issues that affect diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and historically marginalized students

    Offer daily appointments and drop in hours in the Advising Office, virtually, and other locations and offices around campus, as needed by students

    Make accurate assessment of student needs and effectively refer students within and beyond Advising (Financial Aid, Major Department, Health & Counseling, Dean of Students, etc.)

    Promote and facilitate early academic interventions and support, including follow up on faculty referrals and care notices, participation in EXPL 101 (first-year seminar), training other departments and offices, and attendance at campus events

    Discuss options and facilitate paperwork for adding/changing majors and/or minors and referring students to the appropriate academic department

    Support students with the registration process by reviewing resource on MyGeneseo (transcript and DegreeWorks)

    Support students as they advance to upperclassmen status and facilitate their transition to the pre-graduation coordinator in the Registrar's Office


    Utilize our early alert system (navigate) to manage cases and facilitate effective (proactive and reactive) outreach to and tracking of specific student groups (e.g.

    , first generation, D,F,W and Inc grades, and unregistered students)

    Monitor the academic progress of students on credit warning, academic warning, and academic probation; guide students through fulfillment of probation contract requirements, and implement strategies to get them back in good academic standing, including Academic Coaching and the Academic Success Strategies course ( EXPL 125)

    Encourage students to realistically assess their own strengths and weaknesses, developing habits of self-reflection and embodying a growth-mindset

    SUPPORTING THE ADVISING OFFICE
    Support and train Academic Peer Mentors and Office Staff

    Participate in weekly staff meetings

    Participate in relevant campus committees

    Support advising work in other departments and campus units, including: AOP , TRiO, Edgar Fellows, McNair Scholars, and International Student and Scholar Services

    Present at and attend prospective student events, new student orientation events, campus registration events, etc, which will require some after hours and weekend commitments
