    Description
    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Assists head coach in all aspects of the designated sports program. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

    Player Development/Coaching
    • Under the Direction of the head coach, provide coaching in both a team and individual setting to improve sport specific skills.
    • Participate in the creation of practice plans, assist in game preparation, advise on game strategy, and provide direct coaching and assistance during games.
    • Run practice in the absence of the head coach.
    • Research and identify the latest trends and techniques in coaching and playing.
    Recruiting
    • Under the direction of the head coach, research, evaluate, contact and recruit players of high character, scholarship and athletic ability to compete for the designated sport program.
    • Market the designated sports program to prospective recruits, community members, and club members both domestically and internationally.
    • Travel extensively to evaluate talent and market the GCU designated sports program to potential recruits.
    Operations
    • Assist the head coach with competition scheduling.
    • Assist the head coach in the planning, marketing and operation of sports camps.
    • Ensures all aspects of the designated sports program complies with University standards and conference and national affiliation rules and regulations. Identifies potential risk and helps in establishing criteria and plans for correction.
    • Promotes good sportsmanship behavior and enforces discipline, establishes and oversees penalties for breach of standards by members of the team.
    • Participate actively in promotion of GCU athletics and campus events.
    • Other duties as assigned by the head coach, athletic director/athletic director designee.
    • May perform duties which require irregular hours, out of town and/or overnight travel.
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: May be responsible for direct supervision of the other members of the coaching staff, graduate assistants, and students involved in the designated sports program.

    QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to successfully perform the job.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including ability to establish and build a good rapport and effective working relationships with student athletes, other coaches, sports administrators, all GCU staff and management and general public.
    • Ability to handle high pressure situations with tact and diplomacy and public behavior which meets the GCU code of standards
    • Ability to exercise sound judgement and ability to problem solve to handle player performance, team performance and/or conflict situations.
    • Advanced knowledge of fundamentals of designated sport including game rules, regulations and officiating; well versed in game development strategy.
    • Ability to effectively coach, advise and motivate student athletes
    • Thorough knowledge of human physiology
    • Knowledgeable of University, NCAA and appropriate conference rules and regulations.
    • Certification in NCAA off-campus recruiting or ability to pass the testing requirements.
    • Proficiency with computers and MS suite of software applications
    Education and/or Experience:

    Required Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree required.
    • At least three years of intercollegiate and/or elite level sport specific coaching and/or playing and training experience.
    • Knowledge and understanding of Division 1 sport specific program and NCAA rules.
    • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
    • CPR, First Aid and Coaches' Safety Training certifications required
    • Must be able to pass a background check.
    • Must be able to lawfully accept employment in the U.S.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Master's Degree
    • Experience coaching in NCAA Division I
    • AED certification
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.     Constantly: 60%+ or 5-8 hrs/shift Occasionally: 10%-25% or 1-2 hrs/shift

    Frequently: 25%-60% or 4-5 hrs/shift Rarely: <10% or less than 2 hrs/shift
    • Occasionally experiences high pressure to develop and/or maintain winning teams.
    • Frequently requires the strength, stamina and agility to instruct and train students in the physical tactics of sport and competition/game techniques which include movement of the neck, head, eyes, hands, shoulders, fingers, wrists, forearms, upper and lower legs, feed, back and requires unobstructed breathing.
    • Frequent contact with staff, students, guests, and/or members of the surrounding communities.
    • Constantly communicates verbally and in writing/electronically to generate/compose communications or to respond to questions and general inquiries.
    • Work involves constant walking and standing.
    • Physical exertion may be required occasionally to climb stairs and over walls, run, jog, bend, twist, and may rarely crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas.
    • Occasional lifting and carrying; may lift up to 50 pounds or more on rare occasions.
    • Frequently reaches with arms above shoulders, upward, outward and sideways.
    • Frequently grabs, grasps, holds, feels, pushes, pulls with hands and wrist, using back and/or legs.
    • Visual acuity occassionally required to view computer and monitor and software to compile data and/or read correspondence.
    • Visual acuity constantly needed to observe and assess player's performance during practice/games.
    • Must be able to physically operate and maintain control of motorized vehicle.
    • Frequent exposure to seasonal extreme desert heat.
