Position Summary


The Advisor is responsible for guidance on all policies, procedures and decisions regarding incoming, continuing, and inactive (Leave of Absence) students and makes judgments regarding all administrative materials and situations pertaining to all continuing students as it relates to solving their advising needs, ensuring students understand their graduation requirements, helping them select appropriate classes, and providing other academic assistance.

The Advisor position is also responsible for the development and continuous improvement of advising programs for incoming and continuing MBA, MSA, MSIS, and other graduate students.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.


Department Summary
The Fowler College of Business (FCB) consists of one school and four academic departments (Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy, Finance, Management Information Systems, Management, and Marketing), a Dean, an Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Associate Dean for Research and Strategic Initiatives, an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, a College Operations Manager, a Director of Marketing & Communications, a Director for Graduate Programs, a Director for Undergraduate Programs, a Director for Assessment, a Director for the Career Management Center, and a Managing Director for the Wendy Gillespie Center for Advancing Global Business.


The FCB Graduate Programs is responsible for implementing all policies, procedures, and decisions regarding currently enrolled FCB Graduate students (550) and the recruitment, retention and graduation of FCB Graduate students to the on-campus programs.

Graduate Programs provide and coordinate all academic and informational advising for prospective and current students in the FCB Graduate Programs.

Staff in the unit are under the supervision and strategic direction of the Graduate Program Director.

Education and Experience


Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.

Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.


Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.

A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.


Key Qualifications

  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex studentrelated matters.
  • Professional experience in recruiting prospective students for admission to a university and/or an academic program.
  • Ability to interact effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Two years of experience working in a college or university's admissions, advising, evaluations, registrar, or other student servicerelated office is preferred.
  • Flexibility, and attention to detail are required.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Must maintain confidentiality of student information and records.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,610 per month.

CSU Classification Salary Range:
$4,610 - $6,556 per month.
