Essential Job Functions:
- Assesses students in the area of Orientation and Mobility (O & M); including preparing reports, as well as IEP and programming recommendations.
- Plans and implements individual O & M programming as required.
- Consults with instructional and residential staff regarding O & M programming for students.
- Plans and conducts staff inservice training in O & M.
- Participates in IEP, ARD, team and other staff meetings as required.
- Cooperates with other teachers in planning and implementing the instructional program for the students assigned to him/her.
- Works with the principal and other team members in identifying and solving problems related to his/her students in school, dormitory and recreational environments.
- Assists other staff in implementing O & M programming, and in setting up classrooms for maximal learning and access.
- Assists in the selection and provision of programs, equipment and materials to meet the needs of his/her students.
- Keeps accurate accounting of equipment and equipment sales; utilizes equipment and facilities in the most effective manner to support the instructional program.
- Works with staff and students in offcampus placements to assure safe travel skills.
- Promotes positive relationships through effective communication and involvement with staff, family, appropriate agencies, and community members to meet individual students' needs.
- Educates students regarding access to postsecondary O & M services such as services through DARS, private O & M contractors, and dog guide training centers.
- Attends work regularly in accordance with TSBVI leave policy and procedure.
- Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited fouryear college or university
(Original college or university transcript(s) required at time of hire)
- Certification by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals
(Copy of certificate required at time of interview)
- Skill in working cooperatively in a team model of service delivery.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with persons with sensory impairments and/or multiple disabilities.
- Proficiency with Sign Language preferred.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
