    Job Description and Duties

    Positions exist in the Secure Treatment Program at Porterville Developmental Center.

    Licensed Vocational Nurses are licensed by the State of California, work in various state facilities and are responsible for providing direct nursing care, treatment, and rehabilitation nursing care to forensic and non-forensic clients; supervising other personnel who assist them in providing such care; assisting physicians as directed; taking independent action within professional preparation and legal limits; and performing nursing duties as assigned. They assist in training other nursing personnel and do other such related work. Works in a Program where both forensic and non-forensic clients reside. Assigned to a group of clients and is responsible for their nursing care during an 8-hour shift. Maintain license required to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse.

    Working Conditions

    TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: There is potential for distractions during the course of duties; therefore, the LVN will have to remain alert while writing; picking up orders, writing monthly nursing, etc. to assure clients do not obtain contraband that could be utilized as weapons. Spend much of their time performing custody tasks which includes escorting forensic clients in the facility; counting, distributing, and accounting for all utensils to prevent their use as weapons; inspecting facilities to identify security breaches that could lead to the escape of a forensic client; and observing and intervening in forensic client behavior that may injure people, damage property, or signal impending escape attempts. Will have ongoing interaction with clients and may have potential exposure to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinical nursing environment. Working different residences within the facility may also be mandatory.

    TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The LVN will be working with a varied group of disciplines (i.e. Physicians, PT's, PTA's, Regional Center) when there is a medical concern/problem. The LVN ma be exposed to infectious/communicable disease more readily than the PT. The LVN may be required to bend, stoop, and push a medicine cart. Must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, endurance, and sensory ability to perform the duties contained in the duty statement, and during mentally and emotionally stressful and emergency situations encountered on the job without endangering their own health and well-being or that of their fellow employees, forensic clients, non-forensic clients, or the public. Must be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance; must be able to participate in client containment, intervention or restraint; must have the ability to work extended hours and various shifts; must float to all work areas within the facility if called upon to do so.
