Position Purpose


Certified Pharmacy Technicians assist Clinical Pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications and maintaining the drug inventory and maintaining patient records in Pharmacy.

These duties require skill and training but does not include making clinical judgments that require a pharmacist professional judgment. Certified Pharmacy Technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist. Ages of patients served range from neonatal to geriatric.


What You Will Do
The major job responsibilities (MJRs) of this position are batch preparation, new dose preparation, stock preparations, Pyxis functions, inter/intra department orders outside routine processes, maintenance of assigned area(s), liaison activities, medication distribution processes and departmental service requirements**:

  • Procures and distributes medication orders per physician request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies.
  • Enhances the quality of care of delivery of care and effective operation of the department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification required.
  • Required to be registered with the State of Iowa Board of Pharmacy before commencing employment.
  • One to three years of previous pharmacy experience is preferred. (or combination college and experience).
  • Must be able to type accurately, have basic knowledge of medical terms and abbreviations.
  • Manual dexterity and eyehand coordination are useful in preparing or assisting with preparation of orders.
  • Must be able to demonstrate basic computer skills in a Windows environment.
  • Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
  • Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission and vision, goals, and values of Trinity Health.
