Position Overview

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's SPEAR3 is part of the US Department of Energy synchrotron light sources, generating X-ray beams. SPEAR3 supports Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) for multidisciplinary experiments.

We are looking for an Accelerator Physicist to join the SSRL Accelerator Division's Physics Group. Responsibilities of this role include:

  • Supporting the maintenance and operation of the SSRL accelerator complex.
  • Planning and executing upgrades for better performance.
  • Designing a future storage ring for the SSRL photon science community.

The Accelerator Physics Group is currently exploring advanced technologies for a new light source at SSRL, collaborating closely with photon scientists.

Your Responsibilities

  • Enhance the performance of the SPEAR3 storage ring.
  • Conduct accelerator physics experiments during development periods.
  • Contribute to the design of a next-generation light source.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position is at the Associate Staff Scientist level, with room for progression after 3 to 5 years.

Requirements

  • PhD in accelerator physics or related field with 2+ years experience.
  • Knowledge of storage ring physics and beam optics.
  • Hands-on accelerator expertise and strong programming skills.
  • Effective communication and documentation skills.
