    The University of Miami is currently seeking a Medical Physicist to work full time at the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building in Miami.

    The incumbent is responsible for the proper use of device produced radiation and radioactive materials applied to humans in all University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Health Care Systems (JMHCS) facilities and supervises the work and task assignment for Diagnostic Medical Physicists.

    This includes Jackson Memorial Hospital, Jackson South Community Hospital, Jackson North Hospital, Jackson West Hospital, JMHCS community clinics, JMHCS facilities within county correctional facilities, University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami Hospital (UMH), University of Miami at Deerfield, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Lennar Health Foundation and other University of Miami satellite diagnostic facilities.

    Dedicates about 20% of his/her time to matters related to the use of radioactive materials on patients, 15% of his/her time serving as MRI Safety Expert, 55% of his/her time to the use of x-rays in Diagnostic Radiology/Nuclear Medicine, and 10% of his time to training of personnel.

    Serves as Senior Physicist and Assistant RSO under the department manager and director, with oversight of three Medical Physicists, one Medical Physics Assistant and one Technician.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    20% Establishes radiation safety programs for the use of radioactive material; Performs internal audits, testing of equipment and contamination surveys for adherence with radiation safety programs and compliance with Government regulations; Monitors radiation exposure to patients, personnel and the general public; Maintains records and correspondence with Government agencies; Prepares the necessary documentation for licensing of radioactive material; Assists during Government inspections; Member of the hospital's Radiation Safety Committee.

    Serves as Radiation Safety Officer on any of the following State of Florida License Numbers 1319-1, 1319-3, 76-13, 3908-1, and

    15% Establishes protocols for scanning of implanted devices based on MR safe, MR conditional.

    Contribute to clinical services by serving as MRI Safety Expert, optimizing MRI based clinical and research imaging protocols, assist in design and execution of MRI data collection and analysis, develop an ongoing process for quality assurance, ensure regulatory compliance and ACR accreditation, conduct equipment acceptance testing, evaluate new technologies and upgrades, provide MR physics education for resident and fellow training programs, and carry out MRI research, including clinical trials, and collaborate with others conducting such research.

    55% Establishes radiation safety programs for x-rays, linear accelerators and other therapy devices; Establishes quality control, modality accreditation and radiation safety programs for diagnostic x-rays, fluoroscopy, Computed Tomography, Mammography (2D, 3D and Tomo), Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Ultrasound; Performs lead shielding calculations for diagnostic facilities and radiation surveys; Monitors radiation exposure to patients and personnel exposed to radiation; Maintains records and correspondence with Government agencies; Prepares the necessary documentation for registration and certification of radiation equipment; Assists during x-rays inspections, and serves as primary contact during governmental and accrediting body inspections.

    10% Provides radiation safety sessions to resident physicians working with radioactive material or x-rays; Provides radiation safety training to nurses working with radiation or caring for patients with radioactive material.

    10% Other duties as assigned.

    Includes functioning as Acting Director of the Radiation Control Center and Radiation Safety Officer for Non-Human use in the Directors absence.

    CORE QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:
    Ph.
    D. Degree preferred; M.S. acceptable.


    Certification and Licensing:
    American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Medical Physics.

    American Board of Radiology in Radiological Physics.

    American Board of Radiology in Medical Physics.

    American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine - Nuclear Medicine Physics & Instrumentation.

    American Board of Medical Physics in Magnetic Imaging Resonance Physics.


    Experience:
    Minimum 3 year of relevant experience. Qualifies to be Radiation Safety Office for Broad Scope Radioactive Materials License with GammaKnife and High Dose-Rate Brachytherapy (HDR).
