- Knowledge of aseptic (sterile) techniques.
- Knowledge and skills in the culture and identification of bacterial, fungal isolates.
- Ability to accurately observe/interpret test results and report them using laboratory information software.
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to manage time well and carefully follow both written and verbal instructions.
- Excellent manual dexterity.
- Lift with assistance up to 50lbs, and unassisted up to 30lbs.
- See details and colors to correctly interpret laboratory results.
- Normal laboratory environment including exposure to chemicals and odors.
- Stand for extended periods of time.
- Perform test procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial, viral and fungal diseases of animals.
- Evaluate submission forms to determine the appropriate tests for each specimen. Includes Bacteriology, Mycology, and Molecular; Call clinics to clarify ambiguous test requests.
- Set up the specimen on the appropriate test media and incubate at appropriate temperature and atmosphere.
- Prepare and examine cytospin gram stains.
- Perform bacterial isolation, identification and susceptibility testing
- Enter preliminary and final results into Vetview.
- Autoclave biohazard waste
- Wash glassware and plasticware as needed.
- Rotate sample and tissue storage on a weekly and monthly basis
- Prepare Fresh disinfectant solution for all workstations weekly.
- Clean Biosafety Cabinets room 141 and 139- weekly
- Clean anaerobic containers monthly
- Rotate filed paperwork and package for shredding monthly
- Maintain QC organisms- Weekly/ Monthly
- Maintain MS E. coli - Daily/Weekly
- Gram stain QC- Weekly
- Vitek 2 maintanance- Monthly
- Kirby Bauer QC- weekly
- Media QC as needed
- Prepare media as needed
- Prepare Salmonella serotype shipment for NVSL- Monthly
- Check CO2- Daily change tank as needed
- Aerospray TB maintenance- Daily/ Weekly
- Previcolor maintenance- Daily/ Weekly Form
- Check Bactec- Daily Form
- Change MS Dessicant- Weekly

Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
Individual in this position will assist in veterinary diagnostic microbiology work.
Specific duties include general laboratory maintenance, processing a wide variety of animal specimens for bacterial and fungal culture, DNA extraction, PCR, meticulous record keeping, data entry.
