- Makes assessments, analyses and classifications of students' communication competencies and characteristics.
- Plans, prepares and delivers treatment programs for children with speech and language deficiencies. Provides diagnostic evaluations of pupils referred to the child study team for communication disorders and participates in team conferences related to those pupils.
- Develops and implements an individualized educational program (IEP) in conjunction with parents and teachers for pupils who are eligible for speech correction and identifies pupils in need of related services.
- Provides individual and small group intervention sessions with students who have been classified.
Conducts classes in language stimulation. - Maintains close liaison with the child study team and serves as a case manager as assigned.
- Keeps those records necessary for each child and completes all required local, state and federal reports.
Participates in the development and improvement of opportunities for disabled/exceptional students by providing individual or group in service experiences for staff and parents. - Conducts ongoing evaluation of all children in the program to determine appropriateness of their program.
- Acts as educational consultant to classroom teachers, guidance counselors and administrators as required.
- Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community.
- Assumes primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies.
- Maintains professional competence through in service education and other professional growth activities.
- Observes children identified as needing service in classroom settings on an ongoing basis.
- Attends and participates in meetings as deemed necessary and consistent with the needs of the district.
- Performs all duties required by administrative code, state and federal laws, and board policy.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Director of Pupil Services and other administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
- Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
- Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in related field.
- Successful prior experience working as a Speech Therapist, preferably in an educational or other pediatric practice setting.

Speech Language Specialist - Long Term Leave Replacement (September 2 - February 7)
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the Director of Pupil Services, to lead the process in the development, implementation, and coordination of the school district's speech therapy program for students with disabilities or physical/mental impairments by developing and following individualized treatment plan that addresses specific functional needs.

Education:
All interested candidates must apply online. All certifications, resume, letters of reference, praxis scores and transcripts must be uploaded prior to the closing date of the posting to be considered for any position in the Garfield School District. Selection Procedure:
Candidates being considered for the position will be contacted by the hiring administrator to schedule an interview. Effective September 1, 2011, all employees of school districts must reside in the State of New Jersey, unless exempted under law. If you already work for the school district as of September 1, 2011, and you do not live in New Jersey, you are not required to move to New Jersey. However, if you begin your office, position or employment on September 1, 2011 or later, you must reside in New Jersey. If you do not reside in New Jersey, you have one year after the date you take your office, position, or employment to relocate your residence to New Jersey. If you do not do so, you are subject to removal from your office, position, or employment.
Salary is based upon experience, GFT guide and approval of Superintendent.
