Job Summary:


The Heavy Fleet Vehcile Technician will service and repair the mechanical aspects (Engines, Transmissions, driveline and brakes) of "heavy" classified School Board and other county vehicles (buses, cars, utilities and vans).


Essential Job Functions:


  • Performs preventative maintenance checkups and services on gasoline, diesel, and propane school and county vehicles.
  • Completes repairs on school board and county vehicles (e.g. replace engine valves, pistons, and bearings; assemble cooling, fuel and exhaust systems, etc).
  • Inspects, adjusts, repairs, and overhauls breaks, brake systems, transmissions, ignition system, electrical, driveline and a/c and heating systems
  • Responds to emergency road calls from disabled school equipment, makes minor adjustments and/or has the vehicle towed to the bus garage.
  • Trains and supervises automotive servicemen when needed.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as needed or requested by leadership or school administrator (snow removal, clearing parking lots, etc.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Demonstrated experience performing skilled automotive mechanical work on gas, diesel and propane vehicles.
  • Ability to inspect, diagnose, maintenance, and repair the vehicle's mechanical components and its engine.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Knowledge safe working techniques with self and fellow employees with the use of the necessary hand and power tools pertaining to the field
  • Consult supervisor on all matters not considered routine
  • Communicate tactfully in written and oral modes
  • Work independently
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and multitask
  • Ability to switch between tasks with ease
  • Ability to follow procedures as outlined by school board policy, the school principal, or designee

Education and Experience:


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid (current, notexpired) State Driver's License with a Bus Endorsement
  • Successful completion of a fouryear apprenticeship
  • Two (2) years of experience repairing gas and diesel vehicles

Employment Terms:

Employment may be offered as a 12-Month (243 Day), full-time position. The work schedule for this position is 7.5 hours worked per day, excluding lunch. This position is evaluated annually.
