Summary
This position is for a Registered Nurse with a successful history of nursing experience, to work in a fast paced, highly technical surgical intensive care unit.
The Patient Care Services - Critical Care ICU/Stepdown RN provides the highest quality patient care by placing the needs of the Veterans first. Roudebush VA Medical Center is a Level 1A high-complexity tertiary care and teaching facility, with robust Health Professions Trainee and Residency programs, utilizing the latest research and technology to provide the best possible care to our Veteran patients. The Indianapolis VAMC has two ICU/Stepdown units (one on the 4th floor and the other on the 6th), supporting our ability to adjust to changes in patient acuity and staffing needs, promoting best practices, and optimizing outcomes for those who are most vulnerable. Each of the ICU/Stepdown units provide 24-hour monitored care. Newly hired employees are paired with preceptors who foster growth in clinical judgement, knowledge of the care team and workplace environment, autonomy, and keen critical thinking.
Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
Effective use of the nursing process to make practice decisions in an ethical manner.
Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness and cost in planning and delivering care.
Safely administers and documents all forms of medication administration. Calculates and titrates intravenous drips and IVP medications.
Demonstrates acceptable venipuncture technique in accordance with hospital policy.
Assembles equipment and assists medical providers with invasive procedures.
Cares for pre-and post-operative ICU patients recognizing possible complications and acts to prevent these developments
