    Job Description

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), a leading metro news organization with a rich journalism history, seeks a Director of Archives and Rights Management. The AJC's mission is to be the most essential and engaging source of news and information for the people of Atlanta, of Georgia and the South. To achieve that mission, we will transform ourselves from a storied daily newspaper into a modern media company. This important leadership role will help drive key priorities in that transformation.

This director will be responsible for building and organizing our archival collections and overseeing Rights & Clearances on behalf of the organization. The Director will report to the Head of Standards & Practices and be responsible for creating and maintaining AJC's standards and practices around archival activity of text, photo, video and audio in accordance with national standards. This role will also be responsible for overseeing and implementing rights and clearances policies across the AJC including the use of AJC material by other organizations and the use of 3rd-party material by the AJC.

The director will develop tactics and workflows to ensure our archives are easily accessible and useful for editorial teams and, over time, positioned for wider public and commercial use, possibly developing new revenue streams for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This will involve using contemporary tools such as Encoded Archival Description and Metadata and partnering with editorial teams to ensure finding aids they create are uniform, consistent, and of high-quality. Additionally, the director will liaise with our third party archival partners, owning our relationships with Georgia State, ProQuest, NewsBank, and others and maximizing their value to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The director will also develop tactics and workflows to guide editorial teams in use of 3rd party material, including obtaining licenses and clearances, ensuring such use of materials is appropriate and coordinating when legal consultation is required. The role will include developing training, documentation and systems to track rights we obtain. Creating essential Rights & Clearances guidelines that satisfy the evolving needs of the AJC's content and editorial strategy will require deep, on-going partnership with the newsroom and content creators across the organization.

The director will be the first point of contact for researchers and editorial staff in need of archived and external materials to supplement articles, videos and podcasts. An ability to collaborate effectively and respectfully with all teams across the organization is essential.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution serves a growing, vibrant, and diverse metro area in one of the country's most influential states, both politically and culturally. If you believe in the power of journalism to shape a better society, and you want to join a mission-driven team, please apply.

Please note: This person must be based in Atlanta, GA.

    In this position you will:
