Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School of
Chicago, IL is seeking to hire a
full-time Transition Assistant to play a vital role in successfully transitioning our high school students to post-high school education or employment readiness. Our Transition Coaches work
Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm with a shortened academic day in the summer, with
July and
August off.

The Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School (O-School) is a private independent school that provides extraordinary educational and therapeutic services to students aged 8-22.

The Transition Assistant position is part of the expanding Transition Department and uses enrichment strategies in the planning of transitional services to high school students.

Transition Assistants are integral members of the treatment team as they guide students to successfully navigate higher education, job readiness for paid employment and independent living.

Transition coaches have numerous opportunities to invest in and fully engage across the broader therapeutic milieu including leading programming, aiding colleagues in transitional techniques, and engaging in family outreach.

Professional development is prioritized as initiative and creativity are cultivated and encouraged among the transitional team.


A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A TRANSITION ASSISTANT


You will work in collaboration with the Director of Transitional Services and Programs and other professionals to plan and facilitate instructional and enrichment activities in the areas of life skills, college preparations, and career readiness.

Your maturity, good humor, flexibility, and sensitivity allows you to work with diverse personalities and needs.

You provide support to students by modeling strong problem-solving skills and accessing prescriptive curriculum in the service of helping students progress toward meeting their personal transition goals, whether that is college readiness, paid employment, or independent living.


Education & Skill Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or Special Education or a related field
  • At least 2 years of experience working with high school students (preferably those with emotional disabilities and/or Autism)
  • Prior college counseling and/or vocational coaching experience strongly preferred
  • General knowledge of the Transition Timeline a plus
  • Valid Illinois drivers' license
  • Eligible to obtain an Illinois Type 39 Substitute Teaching Certificate
