    Job Description

    Job DescriptionHead Start programs offer high-quality early childhood education, development, healthcare, social and nutrition services to children and their families with low incomes. We use a play-based learning model to help children achieve their developmental milestones and prepare them for school. Head Start encourages the role of parents as their child's first and most important teacher and builds relationships with families that support positive parent-child relationships, family well-being, and community connections. We also support children's learning by providing nutritious meals and screening children for developmental or learning delays.

    As the leader of the classroom team the teacher will plan and carry out early childhood development activities in support of school readiness while maintaining a healthy, culturally & developmentally appropriate classroom setting. The teacher also works with the classroom team to create positive relationships with children and their families. The teacher is responsible for ensuring that children receive appropriate supervision at all times with the help of the classroom team. All work must fulfill Head Start Performance Standards and NYS Office of Children and Family Services Day Care Regulations. Head Start Teachers are active listeners, empathetic, compassionate, flexible and eager to continue learning and improving.

    Designation: Regular/Full-time/Part Year – 35 hours to 40 hours per week according to assignment – 46 weeks per year

    Required Education & Experience:


    • A Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field and NYS Teaching Certification OR plans to obtain it- with at least one year teaching


    OR candidates with an Associate's Degree AND enrolled in an bachelor's degree program in Early Childhood Education or a related field - with at least 2 years of classroom experience.


    OR an Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field may also be considered at some locations - with at least 3 years of classroom experience.


    AND adult supervisory experience is also required.


    • Basic computer skills are necessary - computers are used on a daily basis including office and educational software programs.

    • This position may require a clean, valid, New York State driver's license at some locations


    • Fluency in English & Spanish is desirable


    • Following an offer of employment, all Head Start employees are subject to inquiry with the New York State Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment and a New York State Criminal History Check, including finger prints
