- Perform history and physical examination on orthopedic emergency patients upon decision for admission. Ensure adequate medical clearance for orthopedic pre-op patients by ordering the necessary consultations and testing.
- Serve as surgical first assistant to orthopedic surgeon doing elective and emergency surgery.
- Provide first line orthopedic evaluation and treatment for patients in the emergency room that have already been evaluated by an emergency room physician. Prepare patients for evaluation and treatment by an attending orthopedic surgeon if appropriate. Collaborate with orthopedic residents to avoid duplication of services.
- Provide services for orthopedic inpatients by responding to nurses' calls and expediting discharges, completing documentation, etc. at the request of an attending surgeon as time allows.
- Performs outpatient office visits to include new patients, routine follow up and acute care.
- Order and interpret lab and radiology results and formulate a medical plan of care according to protocols. Daily medical management of inpatients in collaboration with physician.
- Collaborate with the Hospital Physician Service physicians in coordinating orthopedic emergency admissions and medical management of both pre-op and post-op patients. Coordinate functions with any other surgical PAs/NPs to avoid duplication or omission of services.
- Provide post-operative care in local Skilled Nursing Facilities at the request of an attending surgeon including wound debridement, wound care, and education to staff, patient, and family as time allows.
- Collaborate with Orthopedic Surgeon in coordinating his/her clinical services and defer to his decision regarding clinical priorities and assignment.
- Collaborate with Orthopedic Surgeon and Chief Medical Officer of CCH on implementing and refining this position and defer to their decisions regarding programmatic and administrative priorities and assignment.
- Maintain complete and accurate documentation of clinical work performed and complete billing encounter sheets on a timely basis.
- Maintain all necessary certifications and CCH medical staff privileges as an orthopedic NP.
- Collaborate closely with the attending surgeon (immediate physician supervisor) of the patient to whom he is providing services. The NP's scope of practice is always limited to the scope of practice of the immediate physician supervisor.
- Be able to work well under pressure, be patient-focused, work independently, and know when and how to ask for help.
- Communicate effectively and participate actively on the health care team.
- Comply with CCH Medical Staff By-Laws and Rules and Regulations, Human Resource policies, and CCH Corporate compliance policies.
- Provides hospital call coverage, as needed, for the supervising physician
- Massachusetts Nursing License
- Graduation from a program for nurse practitioner approved by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) of the American Medical Association
- US Department of Justice and Massachusetts' Controlled Substance DEA Registrations are required for prescribing practitioners
- BLS
- ACLS certified within 3 months of position
- Nurse Practitioner with 3 years' Orthopedic service-line experience preferred
- 2 years orthopedicsurgical experience, including first assistant in OR preferred
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant's Training Program
- Currently licensed as a Physician Assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
- US Department of Justice and Massachusetts' Controlled Substance DEA Registrations are required for prescribing practitioners
- BLS
- ACLS certified within 3 months of position
- 2 years orthopedicsurgical experience, including first assistant in OR preferred
