We are seeking an Associate Investigator - Material Mechanics with demonstrated experience in a wide range of testing methods to characterize material mechanical properties and responses.
JOB DESCRIPTION (functional responsibilities):
This role reports to the Engineering Science Lab Supervisor and provides material testing support to multiple engineers specializing in advanced experimental and computational material mechanics
Job responsibilities include:
- Independently executing a wide range of mechanical characterization tests specified by Principal Investigators in a safe efficient manner. This includes the fabrication of conventional and customized samples. Common tests are listed under "Requirements" below.
- Management of multiple tasks and stakeholders with frequent changes in scope and priority.
- Analyzing and reporting of test results.
- Presenting results to project teams, management and customers.
- Working with Principal Investigators to develop new test methods and fixtures as needed to meet project objectives.
- Independently indentifying and troubleshooting problems areas.
- Proactively identifying and proposing areas for improvement in lab operations.
- Maintaining laboratory equipment and facilities in safe working order.
Qualifications
- BS degree in an engineering or related technical field.
- At least 5 years of handson experience in experimental mechanics and mechanical testing of materials.
- Demonstrated experience with a majority the following testing tools and methods:
- Dynamic data acquisition principles and hardware
- Quasistatic and dynamic testing with MTS and Instron servohydraulic and screw test frames
- Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA)
- Fatigue and fracture mechanics testing and analysis
- Adhesion testing methods including peel and DCB
- Digital Image Correlation (DIC)
- Strain Gages
- Micro/Nanoindentation testing
- Microscopy
- Thermal Imaging and analysis
- High speed imaging
- Skill with troubleshooting and repairing basic electromechanical systems and instrumentation
- Ability to support and maintain equipment test equipment
- Ability to respectfully work in a culturally diverse environment
