Job Summary: The Environmental Consultant I works under the general supervision of an Environmental Consultant II. Conducts lead-based paint inspections, risk assessments, clearances, Asbestos AHERA and ASHARA inspections, mold assessments, industrial hygiene surveys and other environmental, health and safety surveys, inspections and field related work. Collects physical samples and data in the field. Generates a field inspection reports. Conducts research in areas relevant to Environmental Programs (Healthy Homes Assessments, Pollution Prevention Technical Assessments, Indoor Air Quality Study for K-12 Schools, and Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) Compliance Monitoring). Trains and supervises student workers when they perform the same activities. Provides direct technical field assistance to University SafeState staff.
Additional Department Summary: The Environmental Consultant I is responsible for overseeing lead-based paint inspections, risk assessments, clearances, Asbestos AHERA and ASHARA inspections, mold assessments, industrial hygiene surveys and other environmental, health and safety surveys, inspections and field related work. They will also conduct research in areas relevant to Environmental Programs and in support of the Manager Consultation Services, Manager of Environmental Services and the Director. This position will also work in developing standard operating procedures and training student workers. This position is required to travel, including overnight and weekends.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in environmental sciences, geology, chemistry, biology, engineering technology, or industrial hygiene; OR bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, geology, chemistry, biology, engineering technology, or industrial hygiene and two (2) years of environmental engineering, environmental health, public health, or industrial hygiene experience; OR high school diploma and six (6) years of environmental engineering, environmental health, public health, or industrial hygiene experience. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience performing X-ray fluorescence testing for lead in painted surfaces. Experience and familiarity with EPA and HUD sampling protocols related to sampling for lead in dust and soil. Familiarity with EPA, AHERA, ASHARA, and NESHAPS regulations. Familiarity with EPA, OSHA and/or NIOSH analytical methods. Computer experience involving inputting of analytical data and laboratory database management.
