Ophthalmic Technician

Under general supervision of ophthalmologist, performs as visual field technician during examination/treatment. Provides steady patient flow through clinic area. May perform other basic or specialized technical vision measurements as requested. Completes all relevant medical documentation as required. May assist ophthalmologist with research protocols. Job requires providing technical assistance during delivery of patient care.

Roles & Responsibilities:

_**- Assists attending ophthalmologists in patient examination by performing routine and specialized visual testing in order to ensure expeditious treatment of vision disorders.


  • Technical measurement techniques may potentially include, but are not limited to, manifest and cycloplegic refraction, glare testing, keratometry, fundus photography, applanation and tonometry.
  • Provides assistance ensuring smooth and efficient patient flow throughout initial inquiry, screening and enrollment phases of visit. Under physician supervision, may assist area with pickup or dispensing of relevant medications.
  • Completes all appropriate medical documentation relevant to patient testing.
  • Establishes and maintains patient records. Collects and compiles all patient data as required by area, institutional or regulatory protocols.
  • Performs troubleshooting and maintenance of testing equipment in accordance with manufacturer or other guidelines. Maintains area supplies for ophthalmic testing and for practice operations.
  • May perform various duties, such as answering telephones and scheduling appointments, as requested by Office Manager.
  • Assists physician in performing minor surgery.
  • Train patients in insertion, removal, and care of contact lenses.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
**_

Requirements:
_**- High School Diploma or GED

  • Job requires minimum level of knowledge ordinarily acquired through completion of a training program at a recognized ophthalmic medical assistant training facility in order to learn visual field and other ophthalmic testing techniques.
  • Prior work experience of six months is desired in order to gain familiarity onthejob with administration of ophthalmic testing of patients. New ophthalmic assistants require period of 30 days in order to orient themselves to techniques and work area.
  • Good analytical skills necessary for handling ophthalmology patients during the provision of patient services. Must be able to appropriately assess the correct action to take during the administration of testing services.
  • Good interpersonal manner important during patient testing and care in order to ensure harmonious provision of ophthalmological services.
  • Work requires manual dexterity for use and maintenance of visual field and other testing equipment. Light lifting of ophthalmology equipment may be required. Some basic physical strength may be required for positioning of patients and equipment.
