DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW


The Institute for Scientist & Engineer Educators (ISEE) is part of the University of California Observatories (UCO) and prepares early-career scientists and engineers to be productive educators and professionals, with graduate students being the primary ISEE audience.

ISEE includes a suite of programs focused on effective and inclusive teaching, including mentoring, and also includes training in professional skills such as communication, teamwork, collaboration, and leadership.

The Akamai Workforce Initiative, which includes the Akamai Internship Program, a mentor training workshop, and other workforce development activities in Hawaii, is led by ISEE in partnership with the University of Hawaii at Hilo.


JOB SUMMARY

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary:
$82,300 - $117,000 / Annually. **Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.


Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role.

The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

30% - Program implementation

  • Works in a collaborative manner with others on the ISEE team, which includes other staff, faculty, contractors, and volunteers to manage and share tasks involved in implementing the internship and other programs or workshops
  • Applies organizational skills and project management practices to organize details and anticipate problems required for a smoothly running program
  • Serves as point of contact for program participants while program is running
  • Conducts site visits at organizations who are hosting interns to evaluate interns' overall experience
  • Trains interns in oral and written communication, including both formal and informal communication practices
  • Demonstrates good judgment in notifying the Director of any participant health and safety issues while program participants are under auspices of program

20% - Program announcement and applicant recruiting

  • Establishes connections and visits college courses, faculty, clubs, and student organizations to generate interest that translates to a diverse and qualified applicant pool

15% - Identification of projects and mentors

  • Works closely with mentors at observatories and other tech organizations to identify and describe projects that will provide a good training experience for an undergraduate intern, including projects in the following fields: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, astronomy, physics, electronics, IT/networking, and other STEM disciplines
  • Visits prospective internship sites and mentors to evaluate suitability for a good internship experience

15% - Participant selection and acceptance

  • Evaluates and monitors logístical aspects of internship placements, such as housing, transportation, and funder requirements

10% - Coordination of short courses

  • Coordinates a team of instructors to teach a oneweek internship training course, and other workshops or short courses
  • Applies knowledge of effective and equitable teaching and mentoring practices to develop training sessions, workshops, and other program component

10% - Program infrastructure and administration

  • Participates in ISEE staff meetings and planning, and utilizes ISEE's existing program management infrastructure.
