San Mateo County Health is seeking experienced individuals for the position of
Patient Services Specialist - Correctional Health to, under general supervision, provide difficult, technical, complex or specialized patient services and business office support for Correctional Health Services.


There is currently one regular vacancy in the Correctional Health Services Division within the Maguire Correctional Facility but will occasionally travel/drive to the Maple Street Correctional Center to perform duties of the job, both are located in Redwood City, CA.


The Department of Health Care Services justice-involved initiative CalAIM allows eligible incarcerated persons (I/P) to enroll and bill Medi-Cal (MC) for health care coverage & services received in the 90 days before their release providing support for reentering the community.


Primary duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Identify incarcerated persons that will be released within 90 days that are Medi-Cal eligible.
  • Serve as a resource to internal and external providers to facilitate Medi-Cal billing.
  • Track and manage data regarding those who are eligible and approved for Medi-Cal for state and local reporting.
  • Experience processing Medi-Cal billing.
  • Experience conducting inquiries using State system Medi-Cal Eligibility Data System (MEDS).
  • Ability to assist providers with Medi-Cal billing.
  • Researching Medi-Cal denials, unbilled services, and rebilling when appropriate.
  • Indepth experience using an electronic health record (EHR), preferably Soarian, for business operations.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance.
  • Experience working in a correctional facility/environment
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records and files.
  • Experience organizing work, setting priorities, and meeting critical deadlines.
  • Ability to organize work and time management to ensure assignments are completed timely.
  • Experience working with diverse client groups, providers and staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered on the job.
  • Ability to back up for other functions as needed.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite Word, Excel, SharePoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Examples Of Duties:


Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Research and assemble information from a variety of sources for the completion of forms or the preparation of reports; make arithmetic or statistical calculations related to the billing for patient medical services.
  • Organize, maintain and purge various departmental and patient files.
  • Interview patients to provide information and obtain necessary financial responsibility and personal data.
  • Type varied materials; proofread and check such materials for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with departmental policies and regulations.
  • Enter and retrieve data and prepare reports using a computer; review such reports for accuracy and make corrections as required.
  • May act as receptionist and receive and screen visitors and telephone calls; direct the visitor or caller to the proper person or personally handle the call; operate standard office equipment.
  • May train others in work procedures or direct the work of others on a project or relief basis.
  • Provide off hours support as required.

Qualifications:


Security Clearance_:

_Positions in Correctional Health require that the applicant obtain and maintain a security clearance as a condition of employment.


_Knowledge of_:


  • Medical terminology as related to patient services support work.
  • Policies and procedures related to patient services office support and hospital or clinic business office activities.
  • Office administrative practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
  • Basic business data processing principles and the use of word processing or computing equipment.
  • Proper form for typed materials.
  • Business arithmetic, including percentages and decimals.
  • Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Record keeping principles and procedures.
