Responsible for supervising pharmacy technician duties and workflow.

Assist the Director and Site Coordinator with automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs), medication carousel, and IV room functions to ensure the efficient and compliant operation of pharmacy services.

Maintains proper levels of pharmaceutical supplies, instruments and equipment.

Performs various related pharmacy duties including such quality management activities as drug product recalls, pharmacy area inspections and pharmaceutical care audits.- Oversees pharmacy technician staff and communicates problems to the supervisor or Pharmacist for resolution, as necessary.


  • Provides coaching and feedback to technical staff, and may provide additional corrective action if needed under the guidance of the manager.
  • Development of pharmacy technician monthly schedule and coordinate coverage in case of callouts.
  • Update and maintain pharmacy technician competencies.
  • Coordinates the training of pharmacy technicians.
  • Coordinates and maintains sterile compounding facilities, records and staff competencies as required by USP standards.
  • In conjunction with the inventory control technician, tracks and maintains stock levels of pharmaceuticals and supplies to insure availability in accordance to preestablished par levels
  • Receives expired medications from all patient care areas; documents information on expired bags, bottles and disposes of properly. Returns all expired or damaged controlled substances to the Drug Enforcement Agency for disposal.
  • Evaluates medication needs and submits wholesaler medication order in the absence of the inventory control technician.
  • Covers technician production duties in the pharmacy as assigned by the Director.
  • Oversees compliance with established department policies, procedures and quality assurance programs, safety, security, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Coordinates routine inspections of pharmacy areas; completes inspection reports and documents problems observed and corrective actions taken as necessary.
  • Oversees handling of hazardous substances by observing and demonstrating proper safety procedures and/or "Universal Precautions," as appropriate.
  • Assists in the care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies, such as, Laminar Flow Hoods, biological safety cabinets, computers and printers, packaging equipment and manufacturing equipment.
  • Insures proper functioning of Pharmacy refrigerators and freezers, checking for adequate temperature levels and that cleaning standards are maintained according to departmental procedures.
  • Performs routine maintenance; contacts Facilities Maintenance or Biomedical Engineering, as needed, to perform more complex maintenance duties.
  • Tracks and maintains records of all actions relative to established total quality management criteria according to established procedures regarding sterile compounding.
  • Participates in the interview process and training of new staff.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Minimum of two years' experience as a Pharmacy Technician is required.
  • Maryland Pharmacy Tech licensure required.
  • National certification preferred.
  • Valid Maryland driver's license required.
