Description

The primary responsibility of this individual will be to act as one of three lead mentors for our high school community FIRST Robotics Competition team, Milwaukee Cyber Cheese.

This individual will work closely with the FIRST Robotics Program Coordinator to ensure the successful operation of the team throughout the preseason and official FIRST season months.

All team meetings are at the We Energies STEM Center at MSOE. Currently the team meets from October - December on Tuesdays from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. From January to March, the team will meet at least two nights per week from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 - 1:00. This position may extend into April if the team qualifies for the World Championship.


It is intended the individual in this position will attend most, if not all, team meetings as well as all team competitions.

Travel expenses are covered for this position for competitions outside of the Milwaukee area.


Essential Job Functions

  • Lead and provide structure for up to 40 high school students in team meetings and practices
  • Attend all FRC season events including kickoff, one to two regional competitions, and, if the team qualifies, the World Championship event
  • Work in partnership with FIRST Programs Coordinator to ensure mentor coverage at all team meetings and events
  • Mediate disagreements and other conflicts that may arise throughout the season

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support recruiting students from the community to the team
  • Communicate with families regarding team updates, meetings and other relevant information
  • Support coordinating equipment transportation to and from all events
  • This list of duties and responsibilities is not allinclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time._

Qualifications

  • Experience with FIRST FRC level robotics is strongly preferred, but not required
  • Dependable and able to work a variable schedule; must be able to work evenings during academic year and weekends from January
  • March
  • Prior experience working with youth, especially high school students
  • Experience or a willingness to learn basic shop tools such as bandsaws, CNC's, drill presses and similar equipment
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships and function as a team player
  • Must enjoy working with people, especially high school students
  • Must have reliable transportation to attend all team meetings and local competitions
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish) is a plus, but not required

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as game manuals and rules. Ability to write routine correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate, in English, in both written and oral form.
  • Ability to use numbers to solve problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift items up to 50 pounds. Must be able to push, pull, and move wheeled furniture around a designated work area.
  • Individual will need to be actively moving for 2 to 3 hour windows during team meetings. May require being actively moving for 810 hours on competition days.

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role uses standard office equipment, including but not limited to computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
