SUMMARY OF POSITION:
This position is responsible for creating detailed technical drawings with computer-aided design (CAD) software based on rough sketches, specifications and calculations from engineers.
Designs feature the relationship between various tank car mechanical parts and systems along with information about the materials to be used in production, as well as dimensions of the product being manufactured.
The drafter reviews engineering drawings and designs to ensure adherence to established specifications and standards. Collaborates with design originators to resolve discrepancies between original drawings and final CAD designs.Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Creates detailed drawings and models from verbal and written specifications that are obtained from the Layout Draftsman, Designer, Project Engineer or Chief Draftsman.
- Researches and reviews drawing files and other sources such as manufacturers catalogs, customer specification sheets and Union Tank Car Design Manual.
- Plans and prepares preliminary designs and specifications, working with both 3D and 2D design, ensuring adherence to company and industry standards. These designs are again reviewed and discussed with the engineering team to identify and implement any changes or additions to the current design and features.
- Calculates and specifies dimensions, weight limitations and requirements in materials.
- Resolves any potential issues and redesigns to improve functionality.
- Develops 2D drawings by analyzing prototypes and 3D models.
- Finalizes design by checking dimension of parts, materials to be used, relation of one part to another, and relation of various parts to whole structure or project.
- Ensures final design complies with regulations and quality standards.
- Prepares and presents drawings for final review.
- Maintains project drawing files, associated records and documentation.
- Completes project responsibilities within scope, budget and schedule.
- Provides timely technical assistance and solutions to the team.

SKILLS/SPECIFICATIONS:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
- Ability to generate layout drawings from sketches and specifications.
- Strong analytical skills and mathematical aptitude to solve calculations involving angles, weights, and costs.
- Must be able to take directions and use them to deliver highquality design.
- Solid understanding of drafting principles, techniques and procedures.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently under strict deadlines.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate's degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design or related field.
- Minimum of 2 years' relevant work experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Handson experience with computeraided design (CAD) software.
- Solid Edge or MicroStation software experience preferred.
- Familiarity with 3D modeling tools.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Prepares clear, complete and accurate drawings according to specified dimensions for use by shop staff and various departments in the construction of tank cars and their components.
Analyzes current techniques for possible improvements and works with others to propose ideas/changes that impact productivity, performance and cost savings.
Maintains an awareness of department, manual, trade association, governmental and Company scheduling requirements and advises personnel of procedural or systems changes required to ensure quality standards are maintained and schedules met.
Participates in and actively supports quality projects, activities and Responsible Care initiatives to ensure that the Company achieves its goals.
