The
Director - Quality Ethics will be responsible for leading HMH efforts to ensure HMH's development, study, and implementation of AI is ethical and furthers HMH mission to innovate and provide the highest quality care that is human-centered, accessible and affordable.

This role is responsible for developing and implementing ethical frameworks for trustworthy AI.

This role collaborates closely with stakeholders responsible for all aspects of development of AI at HMH, including, but not limited to leaders in clinical areas, research, data science, risk management, legal affairs, medical informatics, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This is a leadership role which reports to both the VP, Bioethics and EVP, Chief Quality Officer.

The individual in this role contributes time and expertise to the Bioethics Department at HMH, by engaging in bioethics consultation, education, policy development and/or committee service.

This role includes protected time for scholarship and teaching.


Effort is allocated as follows:
60% AI Ethics and Quality/Patient Safety 20% Academic, including AI ethics scholarship and education 20% Clinical bioethics activities.


Responsibilities:

A day in the life of a
Director - Quality Ethics at Hackensack Meridian _Health_ includes:

  • Ensure ethical and trustworthy AI at HMH by providing clinical and ethical leadership at all phases of AI development, study, and implementation.
  • Collaborate with leaders across HMH and external partners to ensure ethical and trustworthy AI at HMH.
  • Lead the development and implementation of education regarding clinical and ethical impact of AI for HMH leaders, TMs, HMSOM students and faculty, and health professions students and trainees.
  • Engage in AI ethics scholarship, particularly that which ensures HMH is an industry leader in the development, study, and implementation of ethical and trustworthy AI.
  • Engage in service to Hackensack Meridian Health and its Divisions, including leadership of and/or participation on committees and councils that address projects or activities relevant to bioethics and/or the use of AI at HMH.
  • Serve as ethics expert for research protocols and funded projects related to the AI conducted by clinical and administrative departments.
  • Participate in the daytime and night/weekend bioethics consultation call schedule and when assigned, perform bioethics consultations in HMH clinical settings

These responsibilities include:

  • Respond timely to consult requests by gathering initial information about the case from the requester and others involved, including health care professionals, HMH leaders and TMs, the patient and others involved in their care and reviewing the medical record
  • Conduct complex conversations/meetings with clinicians, patients, families, risk management, legal counsel, administration, and others and provide ethical analysis.
  • Document the consultation recommendations and ethical analysis in the medical record.
  • Follow up and monitor implementation of the agreedupon resolution.
  • Membership on HMH Bioethics Council and Hospital Bioethics Committees where the individual provides bioethics consultation.
  • Participate in activities across Hackensack Meridian Health Center for Bioethics to ensure the organization fulfills its mission.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards relevant to bioethics and patient rights.
  • Engage in community and professional service in scholarly organizations.
  • Participate in the identification and analysis of ethical issues in the organizational setting.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Licensed Independent Practitioner qualified for clinical practice in New Jersey.
  • Subject matter expertise in AI ethics in the health care setting.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in the field.
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical ethics consultation and bioethics education.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication, interpersonal, organizational, teaching, analytic, and leadership skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills as empathic communicator, careful listener, team leader and team player
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate, prioritize, and manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients and families as well as healthcare professionals across disciplines.
