OVERALL DESCRIPTION:


Under the direction of the Lab Manager and/or supervisor, performs proper handling, reporting, documenting and testing related to programs concerned with substance abuse, body fluids testing and troubled employee referrals.

Performs laboratory and related tests for pre-employment or evaluation of employees. Maintains records. Assists in dispensary as required. May direct employees of lesser classification.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Performs laboratory and other tests for intoxicants, drugs and controlled substances. Carries out testing (including collection of specimens) under detailed procedures which insure confidentiality, secures chainofcustody, preserves integrity of specimens (blood, urine, saliva, breath, etc) and which are valid and reliable in accordance with current professional and industry standards. Administers, calibrates and maintains breathalyzer.
  • Conducts close inspection of each specimen (blood, urine, saliva, etc.) in order to determine the specimen's warmth, color, and signs of contaminants. Notes unusual findings resulting from the inspection as required and includes on chainofcustody form. Seals containers, ensures that specimen collection kit has been secured, properly labeled, and sealed in accordance with standard procedures. Ensures proper record keeping and paperwork are completed.
  • Performs laboratory tests for preemployment, FMCSA, F.R.A., R.R.D.
, examinations and as required by Authority physicians, such as:
urinalysis, venipuncture, saliva, blood sugar analysis, serology, blood urea nitrogen, hemoglobin, HIV, hepatitis screen, etc. Operates, calibrates, and maintains all standards procedures. Ensures proper record keeping and paperwork are completed.

  • Gathers information and prepares written reports of abnormal occurrences, i.e., shy breath/bladder refusals, etc. as spelled out in SEPTA and Federal regulations.
  • As required: tests hearing by use of audiometer and related audiometry equipment; tests vision by use of charts and optical machinery; tests pulmonary functions utilizing spirometry equipment and calibrates equipment with calibrator. Takes readings; obtains predicted results from charts; calculates percentages based on actual readings and predicted results. Maintains records of same.
  • Receives requests for first aid supplies; completes requests; sends to departments and satellite locations.
  • Assists physician in medical evaluation including obtaining preemployment information, case history, checking blood pressure, etc. As required, prepares patient for evaluation by removal of dressing, etc.; assists, as required, in redressing of affected area. Transmits physician's instructions to patient on care of affected area between visits. Performs electrocardiograms as required.
  • Performs Respirator Fit Testing and Spirometry (Pulmonary Function).
  • Decodes Random Review List, calls supervisor to summon donors, maintains escort list.
  • Performs offsite tests in hospitals, other SEPTA locations, and other companies.
  • Directly observes urine collection as required.
  • Cleans all lab areas, blood and urine spills, which complies with 29 CFR OSHA regulations on blood borne pathogens.
  • Maintains neat clean and professional appearance and manner at all times.
  • Maintains all required profession licenses and certifications.
  • Backfills Medical Office Assistant and/or Patient Services Technician as required.
  • Provides testimony when required at hearings, arbitration, and court.
  • Contacts Supervisor's (SAM) employees in a prompt manner to notify employee's of their random testing day.
  • As required, may direct employees of lesser classification.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:


  • Must be a certified Medical Assistant (CMA).
  • Must have completed an associate's degree in a Medical or Science related field from an accredited institution or have equivalent experience.
  • Completion of 35 years outpatient experience is required.
  • Must have completed a minimum of one (1) year of fulltime experience working in a doctor's office or clinical setting immediately prior to hire.
  • Must demonstrate computer literacy utilizing a PC.
  • Within six (6) months, obtain certification both
