About the Department


With a bed capacity of 71 beds, the NICU in Comer Children's Hospital is one of the largest Level III NICUs in Chicago and a major referral center for the sickest newborn infants with the most complex conditions.

It has close to 900 admissions per year accounting for nearly 19,000 patient bed-days.

In collaboration with the Maternal-Fetal Service, Neonatology runs the University of Chicago Perinatal Network with over 10 affiliated community hospitals.

A state-of-the-art facility, the NICU offers critically-ill infants with innovative mode of interventions including ECMO which can be provided for up to three infants at a time with a special group of technicians supplementing our NICU nursing staff; nitric oxide treatment for babies with hypoxic respiratory failure; oscillator support for babies with severe air leak syndrome; in-dwelling gas monitoring to minimize the use of phlebotomy; on demand EEG, and the capability for 24-hour EEG monitoring.

Job Summary


The Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care, in collaboration with consulting physicians and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems.


Responsibilities:


  • Provide direct patient care and formulate plan of care in collaboration with physician, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the Credentials Committee.
  • Communicate followup plan/disposition with the followup health care provider.
  • Prescribe and evaluate pharmacological therapies according to protocol.
  • Attend both high and low risk deliveries as needed.
  • Initiate CPR and perform therapeutic techniques to stabilize a compromised infant in the delivery room, NICU, emergency room and referring hospitals as needed.
  • Stabilize and transport patients as needed.
  • Demonstrate indepth understanding of current professional and legal trends, concepts and issues related to practice.
  • Identify educational needs of family members and assist with teaching as appropriate.
  • Ensure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care.
  • Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.
  • Participate in the development, review and evaluation of policies and procedures.
  • Participate in developing and implementing QI monitoring.
  • Participate in providing inservice and outreach education program.
  • Act as resource for clinical skills for staff on or of the unit.
  • May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physicians.
  • Serve as preceptor to APP students.
  • Evaluates goals and outcomes considering the benefitversusburden, safety, quality, and costeffectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient's plan of care.
  • Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications


Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

  • Work Experience:


Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.


  • Certifications:
Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

  • Preferred Qualifications

Education:


  • Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing.
  • Completion of approved NNP training.

Experience:


  • Two years of clinical experience in a related area of specialty.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • NCC certification as a neonatal nurse practitioner.
  • Ability to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse license by start date.
  • Current license as registered nurse.

Preferred Competencies- Proficiency in resuscitation, intubation and line placement.- Proficiency in EPIC.- Proficiency in use of computers.- Excellent clinical, management and organizational skills.- Ability to conduct physical examination and health assessments.- Being detail-oriented.- Be able to work effectively under pressure.- Be able to use independent judgment.- Strong communication skills.- Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication among various levels of practitioners.- Ability to interview and obtain medical information.- Willingness to enter into written collaborative agreement with collaboration physician upon hire.
