The Economic and Market Research Department (CER) focuses on operationally relevant research on firms and private sector development in emerging and low-income developing economies.

This includes overseeing country private sector diagnostics, working to identify the most impactful business opportunities, creating a series of reports, undertaking research for peer-reviewed journals, organizing conferences with academia, and providing analytical input to guide IFC's strategy.


The Department is seeking to recruit an Extended Term Contract (ETC) to contribute to the new Country Private Sector Diagnostic (CPSD 2.0), including its underlying sector analysis.

The CPSD 2.0 is a core diagnostic of the World Bank Group, prepared jointly with staff of the World Bank.

It identifies, at the country level, sectors or sub sectors with unrealized private investment potential and makes concrete and operationally relevant recommendations to alleviate constraints that hold back private investment that might otherwise result in economic growth and job creation.

The position is based at IFC's headquarters in Washington, D.C.


Duties and Accountabilities

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor's degree in in economics, statistics, econometrics, data science, business, finance or a closely related field. A master's degree in in economics, statistics, econometrics, data science, business, finance, or a closely related field would be considered a valuable asset.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrate good understanding of economic theory macro and microeconomic concepts and principles as applied to the private sector in emerging markets and developing economies.
  • Possess knowledge of drivers of and bottlenecks to the development and functioning of sectors/markets and key drivers of growth, productivity, profitability and efficiency.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with standard macroeconomic, financial or microeconomic databases, data software and analytical tools, and sources of international macroeconomic indicators.
  • Demonstrate analytical skills and practical experience to: (i) synthesize large amounts of information and economic data; (ii) recognize interrelationships and key drivers of trends; and (iii) anticipate next analytical steps
  • Determine the most relevant tools to use for research questions at hand, and how to build basic models in support of that analysis, including through the use of econometric software packages (e.g., Matlab, Stata, Eviews).
  • Manipulate, document and accurately present economic or other data as input to broader analytical work and utilize graphics and tables to effectively and creatively present data in support of a coherent and cogent argument and narrative developed by senior colleagues.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail in proofing and layout of information and ensure that outputs are in accordance with required standards.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely in English. Facility in a second language would also be valuable.
