General Position Summary:


Responsible for maintaining a safe environment of care by enforcing hospital policies, rules, and regulations in order to protect life, health, and property.


Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities:


  • Protects life and property from fire, theft, damage, and trespass.
  • Interacts with Title 36 patients to maintain a safe environment for them and staff.
  • Interacts with disruptive and combative individuals in a safe manner.
  • Makes patrols throughout the building and grounds that are consistent with department goals and metrics.
  • Completes a daily duty log that is thorough and accurate.
  • Is proficient at operating the fire panel control board.
  • Monitors the security camera system for unusual events and activities.
  • Maintains order; aids other staff as needed.
  • Reports building and equipment failures to the Plant Services Department.
  • Directs traffic in the buildings and on the grounds.
  • Enforces hospital policies, rules, and regulations with courtesy.
  • Secures patient property for safekeeping using the exact prescribed procedures.
  • Completes thorough electronic incident reports (RL) as required, specifically regarding unusual happenings, suspicious activity, and hazardous conditions.
  • Prepares incident reports as necessary for supplemental purposes in support of our law enforcement partners.
  • Provides escort services for visitors and staff.
  • Provides access control as appropriate to sensitive areas (including the Emergency Department, Newborn Nursery, Obstetrics, Special Care Units, Pharmacy, etc).
  • Keeps the Emergency Department, Doctors, and other designated parking lots clear of authorized vehicles (i.e. employee vehicles); patrol parking area as part of regular hospital rounds.
  • Maintains safety procedures at the heliport landing sites; clears debris on the landing site.
  • Responds to panic button notifications.
  • Interacts with visitors and/or patients and provides directions and assistance as required.
  • Proficient in radio communications protocol.
  • Displays proper etiquette and mannerisms that reflect the SHINE Behavior Standards.
  • Promotes the Patient Safety Standards as a core value of the organization.
  • Proficient in security camera digital recording retrieval and storage.
  • Obtains and maintains the Basic Level officer certification through IAHSS.

Secondary Functions:


  • Works closely with the security dispatch center, providing assistance and relief when necessary.
  • Is familiar and proficient at routine dispatch functions, such as navigating the switchboard, issuing temporary credentials, making overhead page announcements, and working lost and found items.
  • Coordinates communications with Police and Fire Departments.
  • Provides assistance to personnel in the Plant Services and Emergency Departments as needed.
  • Participates in departmental and association wide informational meetings and in services, including staff meetings, association wide forums, and seminars.
  • Is able to assist in assembling the temporary decontamination tent.
  • Helps maintain a clean and organized work space.
  • Maintains a clean uniform and wellgroomed appearance.
  • Reviews department and association policies and procedures annually.
  • All other duties as assigned.
