Delegating Nurse/Case Manager

Position Overview:

As per requirements set by the Maryland State Board of Nursing and the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) of the State of Maryland, a licensed registered nurse must handle delegation, supervision, training, and review of medication administration practices and health assessment of agency consumers.


Essential Job Functions:


  • Delegate medication administration practices and nursing tasks to qualified Athelas Institute, Inc. Certified Medical Technicians, CMT.
  • Collaborate with appropriate physicians and pharmacy staff to ensure accurate prescriptions for Athelas Institute, Inc. consumers.
  • Review all medication administration and health care records in line with DDA requirements.
  • Supervise and assess medication administration competency of Athelas Institute, Inc. employees.
  • Aid in health-related training and orientation of Athelas Institute, Inc. employees.
  • Conduct regular health assessments of clients receiving delegated nursing services as per the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Maryland.
  • Support Athelas Institute, Inc. employees in offering comprehensive case management for Athelas Institute, Inc. consumers.
  • Maintain appropriate nursing files for individuals supported by Athelas Institute, Inc. and its employees.
  • Evaluate hospitalized consumers to ensure post-discharge services readiness before their return to ALU/group home and/or day program.
  • Administer vaccinations to staff and consumers as directed by physicians and in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Attend essential Athelas Institute, Inc. meetings and training sessions if availability permits.
  • Offer nursing consultation to Athelas Institute, Inc. employees, either via telephone post-screening by Program Manager/Coordinator.
  • Provide service accountings as requested by Athelas Institute, Inc.
  • Maintain a log of all calls/home visits conducted for Athelas Institute, Inc. to review monthly.
  • Develop and update protocols as needed.
  • Fulfill supervisory tasks as delegated by the Director.
  • Role may involve some evening and weekend commitments.
  • Oversee departmental responsibilities including MITC approvals, management, meeting facilitation, and communication.
  • Complete all mandated state and agency documentation following specified guidelines and deadlines.
  • Complete and stay current with required trainings as per DDA/State/Company regulations, encompassing CPR/First-Aid, the Mandt System, certified medication technician course, and regular recertifications.
  • Attend and actively engage in all scheduled meetings.
  • Utilize agency electronic systems for communication, time and attendance, progress notes, incident report filing, etc., as necessary.
  • Undertake any other duties assigned by the Director or designated personnel.

Education Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree preferred, but will consider Associates Degree


Training and Experience:


  • Must hold current Maryland Registered Nursing licensure. (DDA preferred but not required)
  • Desired (1) year experience working with adults with intellectual disabilities in a community environment.

NURSE'S ABILITY TO PRACTICE:

It is the nurse's duty to keep up-to-date with Registered Nursing licensure in the State of Maryland, current Medication Administration Training approval from DDA, and meet continuing education requisites for maintaining clinical proficiency.

The nurse is also responsible for carrying nursing malpractice insurance.


Physical Requirements:


  • Must be capable of walking, standing, and sitting for up to 8 hours. Should be able to lift up to 50 lbs. or more based on supported person's needs (employing health and safety lifting/turning techniques or assistive devices).
  • Must be adept at executing all Mandt Systems training physical interventions and techniques, encompassing aiding supported individuals to stand, offering ambulatory support, physical releases, and applying physical restraints.

Work Environment

  • This role is situated in a clerical, office setting. Standard office equipment like computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines are routinely used in this position.
