    SUMMARY

    Heluna Health and the California Department of Public Health's (CDPH) Drinking Water and Radiation Laboratory Branch (DWRLB) seeks a Research Assistant to support the CDPH wastewater surveillance (WWS) laboratory. The CDPH DWRL WWS laboratory tests wastewater, or sewage, for fragments of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and other infectious diseases for routine monitoring. Results are used to supplement existing public health surveillance and monitor infectious disease trends and outbreaks. The CDPH WWS program is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) and is recognized as a national Center of Excellence (CoE). This position is funded under the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) cooperative agreement.

    The Research Assistant is responsible for the overall logistics, coordination, and tracking documentation related to the laboratory wastewater program. These include managing laboratory inventory and supplies, tracking samples from wastewater utilities, and working closely to coordinate logistics (via electronic and telephone communication) between multiple programs including wastewater utilities, courier service agents, vendors, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other CDPH programs including the wastewater surveillance epidemiology and administrative teams.

    The Research Assistant will participate in routine laboratory operations and oversee sample receipt, accessioning, and tracking inventory of lab supplies and reagents for maintaining operations, and placing purchase orders routinely. Working closely with the DWRL Microbiology Unit Supervisor. The Research Assistant will also oversee implementation of lab infrastructure improvements, such as bar code tracking, and accessioning and data storage platforms into LIMS, and to support direct machine-to-machine transfer of experimental data for archiving and reporting. The Research Assistant will work to implement other lab operational improvements as necessary to support the overall wastewater surveillance laboratory program.

    The hourly range for this position is $26.44/hour - $31.25/hour depending on experience/ qualifications.

    Limited term position that is dependent on grant funding through 6/30/2027 .

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Perform daily logistics activities including sample tracking, coordination, receipt and accessioning to DWRL for wastewater testing.
    • Monitor and maintain laboratory inventories to support testing operations.
    • Assist with implementation of LIMS platform for internal data archiving and reporting for the integration of routine testing data and associated genomic sequencing data.
    • Review laboratory testing reports for accuracy and completeness and perform preliminary data analyses prior to reporting. Submit final analytical reports to CDPH collaborators and respond to any questions regarding sample results.
    • Serve as a liaison between wastewater utility partners, courier services and lab program staff to obtain, retrieve, and maintain sample tracking and communications with stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with lab analysts for tracking and reporting purposes and resolve issues with courier services.
    • Track budget expenditures including shipping and supplies, obtain quotes and execute purchase orders for maintaining laboratory inventories, and archive and organize invoice statements.
    • Participate in WWS project conference calls and attend meetings, provide administrative and fiscal updates and information as needed.
    • Analyze WWS lab program operations and make recommendations to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
    • Maintain excellent working relationship with CDPH programs, Heluna Health, and other collaborating partners.

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS

    Education/Experience
    • Bachelor's degree, required.
    • Experience working in in a public health laboratory setting, or equivalent, is highly desired.
    • Experience working collaboratively with diverse groups with multiple activities, timelines, and deadlines.
