The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) seeks to add a talented Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (VP of DEI) to its team.

The Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion holds a pivotal role leading numerous initiatives within the ADEA Office of Access, Diversity, and Inclusion (ADI) portfolio, aimed at fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) throughout dental education, the oral health profession, and the academic health professions.

Reporting directly to the Chief Diversity Officer, the VP of DEI collaborates closely with the ADEA senior leadership team to establish clear objectives and key performance indicators, aligning them with the ADEA Strategic Directives.

These initiatives are designed to improve diversity, foster belonging, enhance well-being, and develop cultural competency among administrators, faculty, fellows, residents, and students within dental education programs.

Moreover, the VP of DEI is dedicated to cultivating a nurturing environment that facilitates effective learning and supports the progression of all members within the dental education community.


Apart from overseeing the day-to-day operations of the ADEA Office of ADI, the VP of DEI plays a pivotal role as the primary point of contact for addressing both internal and external stakeholders' concerns and developing effective solutions.

They provide guidance to ADI staff, ensuring smooth operations and the timely execution of tasks.

Additionally, the VP of DEI directly supervises three colleagues within the Office of ADI, namely the:


  • Director of Cultural Engagement and Inclusive Analytics,
  • Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Learning, and
  • Director of Inclusive Programs and Services/ADEA Deputy Director for SHPEP.
Moreover, the VP of DEI is responsible for developing and executing diversity-focused programs and activities.

They offer project support to ADI team members, ensuring the creation of high-quality programming in various areas including DEIBJ, health equity, and cultural/structural competence.

Additionally, they spearhead efforts to recruit and retain individuals from underrepresented groups within dental education and the academic health professions.

Finally, the VP of DEI collaborates closely with both the ADEA Corporate Relations team to secure external funding for DEIBJ initiatives and the ADEA Communications and Marketing team to develop DEIBJ marketing materials and branded pieces.

Additionally, they may take the lead on special projects, deliver presentations on DEIBJ topics, and/or serve as the representative of ADEA at meetings with external stakeholders and organizations, as directed by the ADEA Chief Diversity Officer or President & CEO.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Manages the daytoday operations of the ADEA Office of Access, Diversity, and Inclusion.
  • Directly supervises the Director of Cultural Engagement and Inclusive Analytics, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Learning, and Director of Inclusive Programs and Services/ADEA Deputy Director for SHPEP.
  • Provides oversight support of the Senior Director for ADI/Staff Liaison to the ADEA Council of Students, Residents and Fellows to provide guidance. This includes guiding programmatic activities and collaborating with ADEA Chapter leaders to develop initiatives that support students, residents, and fellows interested in academic dentistry and oral health research careers.
  • Supports the development and writing of grant proposals to secure external funding for DEIBJ programs, provides effective budgetary grant management, and establishes compliance protocols, policies, processes, and reporting for grants within the ADEA ADI portfolio in collaboration with the ADEA Finance and Grants Administration team.
  • Provides program support for the ADEA Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) Principal Investigator and the ADEA SHPEP Deputy Director for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation SHPEP grant as needed. Ensures SHPEP grant budgetary compliance and reporting for submission to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
  • Develops and supports ADEA activities and initiatives to promote and implement DEIBJ, health equity, wellbeing, cultural/structural competency, cultural sensitivity, and inclusive excellence in academic dentistry and the oral health professions.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for daily inquiries regarding ADI operations and activities from internal and external stakeholders, providing effective solutions.
  • Stays informed about national and global diversity and inclusion issues and best practices for improving access, diversity, and inclusion in higher education and healthcare, particularly in dentistry and allied dental education.
