Description
The University of Lynchburg, a private regional university, located in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge
Mountains in central Virginia is seeking a full-time Accountant to join our Business Office team.
The Accountant reports to the Senior Accountant – Endowment, Investments, and Cash Management and
performs a variety of the University's monthly bank reconciliations, general ledger journal entries and
reconciliations, and other complex general ledger analyses.
This position requires excellent accounting and communications skills along with strong computer skills and spreadsheet proficiencies. Previous accounting/auditing experience required. Experience in not-for-profit or higher education accounting
preferred. This position works onsite.
Job Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Job Purpose:
Position includes preparing monthly reconciliations, analyses, journal entries, and HR
accounting and payroll reporting support. Responsible for maintaining, auditing, inspecting, and reporting
complex financial records of the University.
Main Job Duties:
Reconciles the University's main bank account that includes activity of all auxiliaries, student account receivables, miscellaneous revenue and receivables, and all cashier activity and online payments.
Monitors and reconciles all online payments as a large portion of the bank account reconciliation.
Recognizes all payments that do not automatically post to the general ledger and prepares monthly journal entries for these deposits.
Reconciles the Payroll bank account, the Financial Aid bank account, and corresponding EFT transfer account.
Verifies proper recording and timely transfers of Alternative Loans between Financial Aid and Student Receivables.
Prepares College Account charges journal entry and posts to the general ledger. Reconciles College Accounts Receivable monthly.
Reconciles the Campus Store and Dining Services revenue accounts.
Prepares monthly sales tax calculations and financial statements for the Westover Room and On Common Ground.
Reviews and records commission revenue from on-campus Domino's location.
Reviews credit card merchants' statements, analyzes and records monthly fees.
Prepares the annual report for the Westover Room license.
Reconciles all benefits withholdings from the payroll system to the general ledger, including medical, dental, and vision.
Posts all journal entries submitted by the Payroll department.
Reviews and reconciles the Form 941 quarterly.
Coordinates annual Workman's Comp audit.
Prepares fiscal year-end salary accrual journal entry.
Coordinates surprise cash counts in cashier's office and auxiliaries. Reviews petty cash journal entries for accuracy, corrects where necessary, and posts to general ledger.
Reconciles petty cash general ledger account monthly.
Performs monthly reconciliation of accrued accounts payable.
Monitors positive pay exceptions and ACH activity that requires approval. This is done daily, even if the University is closed for a holiday.
Prepares various schedules and reconciliations for the fiscal year end audit.

Qualifications
Experience/Skills:
Knowledge of Excel software and Word.

Self-starter with ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
Ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.
Physical Demands:
Much time sitting with moderate walking or standing. Generally, work in office and meeting rooms.
Tasks such as working at a computer keyboard require extensive wrist and hand movements.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field from four-year college or university with a minimum of 2-3 years of experience.
