Title:
Admission Counselor
Position Purpose:
Guided by the tenets of the Bates Mission Statement, the Admission Counselor serves as a member of the Admission team to recruit, admit, and enroll an academically talented and diverse class of students.
Job Duties:
- Represent Bates at inperson and virtual high school visits, college fairs, and other off
- Manage geographic territories as assigned; coordinate 4 to 6 weeks of inperson and virtual travel per year; develop an annual recruitment plan and evaluate effectiveness of each activity; recommend improvements and changes in strategy as appropriate.
- Lead oncampus and virtual information sessions and counsel families through the admission and financial aid process.
- Engage with key constituents such as alumni, current students, high school counselors, and communitybased organizations and respond to concerns or inquiries from prospective students, parents, college/guidance counselors, coaches, alumni/ae, and other constituents.
- Collaborate with colleagues within Admission and across the college (i.e. Student Financial Services, Communications, Harward Center, Purposeful Work, Office of Intercultural Education, Athletics, etc).
- Attend designated inperson/virtual conferences or other professional development activities.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Admission or the Vice President of Enrollment & Dean of Admission and Financial Aid.
- Serve on multiple office teams, which could include any combination of the following:
Communications Team:
Events Team:
Organizes all on-campus programs (Summer Open Houses (2), Fall Open House, Prologue to Bates (2), BBC Counselor Tour, MLK Day, Mount David Summit, Admitted Student Receptions (2), and Maine Day/Junior Open House.)
Students in Admission (SIA) Team:
Oversee all student recruitment efforts on campus (tours, senior fellows, summer interns, event ambassadors); assist in hiring, training, and supervising all student workers; approve student worker timesheets; update training manuals; provide vision and direction of all student outreach.
Yield Team:
Collaborate with the Admission Events, Communications, Alumni in Admission, and Students in Admission teams to develop and implement a multi-layered yield plan that incorporates on
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor's Degree required.
- Valid driver's license required.
Experience
- 01 year of experience (after graduating from college) in admission or in a student/customer service, academic, and/or nonprofit setting is preferred but not required.
- Familiarity with the academic environment and higher education, preferably the liberal arts.
Skills and Knowledge
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and to serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse and inclusive
- Excellent communication (written, verbal, and presentation) skills. Experience in digital/video media is a plus, but not required.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with mínimal supervision.
- Impeccable organizational (time, task, project management) skills and ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community.
- Strong interpersonal skills (a sense of humor is a plus) with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships. Must approach work with

- Basic data management system and/or CRM proficiency (e.g. Slate) is preferred, but not required.
- Ability and willingness to travel (by air, bus, car, or train) domestically for four to six weeks, concentrated in the fall and spring.
- Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings and other nontraditional schedules.
