Position Summary


The social service coordinator is the friendly face and first point of contact for those seeking assistance from The Salvation Army's social services office.

With a warm and caring approach, they assist individuals in person or over the phone, determine eligibility for services, and connect people to a wide range of helpful resources, both public and private.

The coordinator will work under the supervision of the director and office manager in all aspects of the outreach service programs provided by the Southeast Communities.


Essential Functions

  • Work within the office team environment to achieve the overall local goals of The Salvation Army
  • Connect with other agencies within the community to stay aware of and provide other available resources.
  • Serve all clients on a scheduled basis as assigned to meet their needs within our ability.
  • Determine eligibility for the services provided.
  • Receive/Interview all persons seeking social services assistance, whether in person or by telephone.
  • To perform the recording of services onto the client database system (Wellsky and Angel Tree)
  • Manage the food pantry and its inventory and meet cleanliness and food safety standards.
  • Distribute emergency food, place orders with approved vendors, supervise food pantries (volunteers, maintenance, and food rotation), and coordinate food drives.
  • Distribute Diapers, personal care, and other essential items as available and prepare related monthly reports.
  • Lead, manage, and submit all volunteers assigned to the social service department.
  • Authorize services within approved program policy or make appropriate referrals to other staff and/or community resources for other services or assistance.
  • Per policy, maintain case records (hard copy or electronic) for all clients seen in the office.
  • Secure and account for the giftinkind report as needed or directed to the office manager.
  • Hot Meals Program Intake (Wellsky)
  • Prepare monthly social service statistical reports.
  • Prepare monthly food bank reports.
  • Donation pickups will be scheduled as needed.
  • Coordinate seasonal assistance programs (Client intake, distribution)
  • Attend all training pertaining to Social Service

Working Conditions
Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist intermittently or sometimes continuously. Ability to grasp, push, and pull objects such as files and file cabinet drawers and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax, and telephone. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma GED required, college degree and/or prior work experience related to the position is preferred.
  • Knowledge of computers and data entry
  • Must be 21 years of age or older, possess a valid Class C California Driver's License, and clean MVR.
  • A criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.
  • Understand and practice confidentiality.
  • Treat others with respect and compassion.
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English; bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Team player
  • Knowledge of Salvation Army policies and procedures related to the provision of social services.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, capable of meeting deadlines.
  • Must be culturally sensitive and nonjudgmental.
  • Knowledge and sensitivity regarding issues of homelessness, mental health, and chronic illness
  • Complete required Salvation Army training (decision driving, Child Safety Training (PTM ), etc.
  • Must possess flexibility, leadership, conflict resolution, and communication skills.
