Financial Aid Counselor

Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid

The University of St.

Thomas (UST), a private Catholic University committed to the liberal arts and the religious and intellectual tradition of Catholic higher education, located in Houston, Texas, near the vibrant central business district, Texas Medical Center, and museum district, is seeking applicants for a full-time Financial Aid Counselor.

This position reports directly to the Dean of the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.


Purpose of the job:


Essential duties and responsibilities:


  • Counsel students and their families regarding financial aid eligibility and scholarships, and their rights and responsibilities associated with those programs.
  • Assist students who are completing scholarship appeal forms, and track appeals from start to finish.
  • Mange scholarship posting as departments award scholarships to students.
  • Assist with the distribution of information on various financial aid programs available to students.
  • Conduct financial aid presentations on campus and occasionally off campus (i.e., high schools.)
  • Provide support to the other financial aid professionals and promote a crosstrained studentcentered atmosphere.
  • Assist other university offices to meet the needs of ABSN students and families efficiently and effectively.

Other duties and responsibilities:


  • Perform all other duties as required and assigned.

Knowledge and skills required:


  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree
  • Prior financial aid work experience
  • Knowledge of awarding procedures, creating budgets, understanding annual and aggregate loan eligibility.
  • Familiarity of current issues affecting the financial aid and scholarship profession
  • Demonstrated exceptional mathematical ability and public relations skills

Working conditions:


  • May be required to work weekend/evening hours (during peak periods).
  • Significant amounts of personal, phone, and electronic interaction with others.
  • When workload demands, individuals will be expected to work the necessary hours to get the job done.
  • Physical capabilities for normal office environment required.
  • Limited travel.
  • Nonsmoking environment
