Job Summary:


Vertex has established a new research site in the Boston area where research, development, and clinical manufacturing for cell and genetic therapies will be primarily based.

Cell and genetic therapies represent two rapidly emerging therapeutic modalities with the potential to treat—and even cure—several of the diseases Vertex is focused on, including sickle cell disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and type 1 diabetes.

Further investment in a research site specifically designed to advance these programs will be key to Vertex's continued and sustained leadership in these exciting approaches.

At Vertex Cell and Genetic Therapies (VCGT) our research teams will bring together the best biology, technologies, and enhanced manufacturing capabilities to ensure we bring these cutting-edge transformative therapies to patients as quickly as possible.


In this position, you will be responsible for performing the daily receiving, storage, and distribution activities for the VCGT cGMP warehouse and the 3PL locations.

The Logistics and Distribution Specialist performs multiple activities in support of Vertex's Supply Chain with a moderate degree of supervision.

Applies basic knowledge of logistics principles to execute upon production and inventory plans.

The position will be required to perform and document daily warehouse operations in a cGMP environment, while maintaining a high level of attention to detail, good documentation practices, and the ability to follow procedures as written.

In this role the individual will exhibit the ability to communicate well, actively listen and work in a team-oriented environment to ensure all deliverables are executed on time.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Following cGMP procedures, retrieving documents from the QA management system, and complete documents using good documentation practices.
  • Ability to work in warehouse environment under varying temperatures and conditions.
  • Perform material handling activities, receive, store, pick, and transfer materials per cGMP guidance and applicable procedures.
  • Oversee material storage, handling, and distribution at the 3PL location.
  • Use existing procedures to solve logistics issues and selects modes of transport.
  • Assist in process improvements to reduce leadtime and eliminate nonvalueadded activities.
  • Support various crossfunctional groups resolve issues that may block the timely flow of materials.
  • Perform daily deliveries to other Vertex sites, from and to 3PL locations.
  • Utilize Oracle to complete requests for materials and subsequent deliveries.
  • Ensure materials are shipped in correct temperature conditions and are handled appropriately.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of the ERP system (Oracle) and execute real time transactions.
  • Perform cycle counting, material receipts/issues, inventory reporting, and order shipping confirmations.
  • Ensure accurate inventory is maintained and inventory discrepancies are communicated/investigated.
  • Ensure compliance and execution against all SOPs related to GMP warehouse operations.
  • Safely operate all motorized equipment including forklift trucks, electric pallet jacks, lifts, and company vehicles.
  • Work cooperatively with cross functional departments to complete investigations as necessary.
  • Ensures all material transported on assigned route is accounted for, and documentation is verified and complete.
  • Ability to shrink wrap and secure materials to pallets.
  • Pull and stage material in the warehouse.
  • Assists with reviewing GMP forms throughout the process and at completion.
  • Ensure performer and verifier are properly identified where required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working within a cGMP supply chain environment and/or with GCP regulations
  • Understanding of storage and shipping of cold chain products in the Biotech/Lifesciences industry and the associated documentation requirements. Experience in cell therapy highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of warehouse and distribution business processes.
  • Knowledge of common ERP systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn electronic systems quickly and efficiently.
  • Ability to perform the physical demands of the role, including lifting moderately heavy boxes.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, and in a team environment
  • Valid and active Driver's License.
