    Description

    Role: Research Associate

    Achieving true sustainability in the fashion and textile industries demands a fundamental reimagining of how we approach the design and production of raw materials. Central to this transformation is the adoption of a circular model, where materials are reused, recycled, or regenerated during their lifecycle. This shift necessitates a departure from reliance on synthetics and the development of a supply chain based on biomaterials. By transitioning to a global closed-loop economy rooted in biomaterials, we can break free from the linear 'take-make-dispose' model, fostering a more regenerative and sustainable approach to fashion for the enhancement of both human and planetary health.

    At Finiks Forge, we're dedicated to furthering this mission by pioneering a groundbreaking biomaterial platform to give new life to protein waste. Our innovation focuses on upcycling such valuable resources into regenerated sustainable fibers suitable for various textile applications.

    Leveraging cutting-edge advancements in biomolecular self-assembly, we employ supramolecular strategies to reimagine the remarkable properties of natural materials. Our aim is not only to create sustainable alternatives but also to ensure scalability comparable to synthetic fibers.

    Our material innovation is supported by the National Science Foundation through an SBIR award and a network of corporate partners within the textile supply chain.

    Your essential job responsibilities:

    • Implement novel eco-friendly chemical approaches to recover polymeric biomass from the textile and food industry waste streams
    • Develop and execute experiments to optimize bio-polymer solution formulations and their processing through material manufacturing platforms
    • Perform feasibility studies to test the processing of bio-polymers into macrofibres
    • Perform characterization assays to study bio-polymers and macrofibre properties in terms of chemical composition and mechanical performances
    • Analyze experimental data and run simple feasibility studies to facilitate the achievement of R&D objectives within fixed timelines
    • Work closely with the CEO to plan develop and document intellectual property, including patent applications and trade secrets, to protect Finiks Forge's proprietary technology and innovations
    • Document experimental protocols, results, and conclusions, ensuring that all work is properly recorded
    • Organize and file experimental protocols in form of SOPs

    Your experience or skills:

    • BSc with two years of industry experience or PhD in biopolymer science, biomaterial engineering, or chemistry, with a focus on biomaterials and biopolymer design, formulation, and physical characterization
    • Demonstrated competency in reaction setup, purification, filtration, and mixing techniques, as well as standard characterization methods such as FT-IR, UV-Vis, and H-NMR
    • Experience with biopolymers, synthetic polymers and biomaterials, and excellent skills in complex solutions formulation, processing and characterization
    • Experience in fiber engineering and manufacturing, including wet-spinning or melt spinning, is a significant advantage
    • Knowledge of tensile and compressive testing using Instron or ZwickRoell, DSC, DMA, and rheology is preferred.
    • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to design experiments, analyze data, and prepare PowerPoint presentations
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Passion for sustainability and environmental responsibility, with a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the textile and fashion industry
    • A desire to work in a startup atmosphere, collaborating closely with a small team to achieve ambitious goals
    • Excellent communication skills with team members and the ability to manage external relationships with suppliers and clients

    Compensation

    Salary range of $55,000 to $85,000 depending on experience, along with a competitive stock option package.
