The Perioperative Resource Assistant position description incorporates the core responsibilities of the job.

As a member of the Perioperative Surgical Team and under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse and/or an anesthesiologist the Perioperative Resource Assistant will assist in the delivery of patient care to pediatric surgical patients in a safe and organized manner.

Will be responsible to maintain supplies and equipment in the induction room, operating rooms and all anesthetizing locations:

set-up and support anesthesia cases, including but not limited to cardiac cases; and ensure availability of anesthesia equipment and monitors; perform routine maintenance and point of care testing and documentation on anesthesia medical devices.

In addition, may provide patient transport and environmental support as needed.


Qualifications

Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED (required)


Minimum Work Experience
1 year Experience in environmental services, transport services, nursing/surgical services (required)

1 year Prior experience as an anesthesia support tech in a surgical service environment (required)


Required Skills/Knowledge
Possess good oral and written communication skills.

Performs oral and written tasks accurately.

Able to maintain composure and focus on assigned tasks in a high stress environment.


Functional Accountabilities

Equipment Management

  • Maintain preset levels of unit supplies and materials in storage and patient care areas.
  • Report, document and seek repair of malfunctioning nonanesthesia related equipment.
  • Review designated induction room/operating room s equipment on a daily basis for ensure function and availability, including stretchers, oxygen tanks, oxygen gauges, and anesthesia monitors, suction devices.
  • Assist in setting up OR tables, ensure availability of positioning devices based on circulation nurse, surgeon and anesthesia input.
  • Ensure cleanliness and restocking of positioning devices, anesthesia equipment, medical equipment to their proper location.
  • Clean and sterilize largynscope handles, blades, LMA and return them to their proper location; clean room, equipment, and stretchers using proper asepsis techniques; clean and prepare rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning.

Anesthesia Related Functions

  • Ensure the necessary anesthesia equipment and supplies are available.
  • Clean and restock the induction rooms between patient use.
  • Ensure the assigned room has all the necessary supplies needed for intravenous and arterial line insertions, spinal/epidural catheter placement.
  • Stock anesthesia pixis and assist with ordering anesthesia supplies and organize anesthesia supplies in miniwarehouse.
  • Set up IV's for anesthesia provider.
  • Support anesthesia in Cath Lab, CT scan,MRI, Nuclear med., GI suite; assist with anesthetic room and turnovermasks, circuits, laryngoscopes, heated circuit, etc.

Nursing Support

  • Perform all activities following OSHA guideline and practices; observes aseptic principles
  • Assist in preparation of the operating room; set up equipment and pull supplies, and return equipment to its designated locations.
  • 3Check, clean, restock assigned operating rooms, including but not limited to anesthesia carts and storage areas, including maintaining availability of betadine, saline, scrub brushes, caps and masks.
  • Check expiration dates of medication placed in the medication refrigerator, mediprep station, medication cabinet; return expired medication to the pharmacy.
  • Transport blood and specimens to and from Laboratory as needed.
  • Assist surgical supply assistant and put away surgical supplies in minwarehouse.
  • Know expiration dates and be able to ascertain the expiration dates on sterile supplies; if expired, pull them from circulation and send them to be resterilized in SPD.

Transport Functions

  • Transport patients to the Operating Room with complete charts, including signed permit, history and physical, and preop checklist, and appropriate identification.
  • Provide positioning devices after consultation with the registered nurse, anesthesiologist, and surgeon.

Communication

  • Speak to patients, families, visitors, staff and other Hospital personnel using kind, friendly and tactful communications.
  • Respond to questions and requests in a helpful manner.
  • Report patient/family concern/complaint to charge nurse immediately.
  • Seek assistance from charge nurse or care team member when confronted with an unfamiliar situation or problem.
  • Obtain equipment, supplies, required services from other departments; use appropriate method, tact and diplomacy.
