Description

Corrections Specialists are jail and prison-specialized paralegals responsible for assisting all NYCDS attorneys and social workers in matters pertaining to client welfare and court/corrections communications and logistics.

Corrections Specialists help to improve conditions of confinement for clients and limit pre-trial detention periods, as well as support sentenced clients in New York State custody.

This is a
two-year position only (7/1/24 to 7/31/26); ideal for recent college graduates taking gap years prior to attending graduate school.


Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Weekly visits to Riker's Island
  • Client interviews (via video conferences, and in person at correctional facilities)
  • Communicating with family members of clients
  • Client referrals to programs, bail options, etc.
  • Assist clients with health, safety, and wellness concerns
  • Assist attorneys with bail/bonds and sentencing issues
  • Logistical support for attorneys and social workers (i

e:
warrant status checks, client check-ins, etc.)


Job Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Proficiency in MS Office (particularly MS Word and MS Excel)
  • Attention to detail and problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational/timemanagement skills and the ability to prioritize work.
  • Must be comfortable entering correctional facilities.
  • Must be sensitive to the varying needs of our client population (mental health, substance abuse treatment, etc.).
  • Ability to communicate confidently and appropriately with people of all backgrounds and clients with a range of charge types and dispositions
  • Strong interest in criminal justice and social welfare systems

Competencies:


  • Must work and communicate well with fellow colleagues and NYCDS leadership as well as court/corrections representatives.
  • Competency in multiple languages preferred.
  • Desire and ability to advocate for all clients
