    CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION

    CLASSIFICATION TITLE:

    ANIMAL CONTROL TECHNICIAN

    PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

    This entry level position is responsible for completing various functions within the Animal Control Facility in relations to caring for animals housed at the center.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    The following duties are normal for this position.

    The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.

    Other duties may be required and assigned.
    Observes animals for signs of illness or stress, and administers medication as prescribed.
    Feeds, handles and restrains animals.
    Assist citizens with adoptions.
    Maintains records on animals, including treatments and behavioral observations.
    Collects blood, urine and fecal samples.
    Walks animals.
    Cleans cages, equipment and facilities.
    Must be able to physically lift and carry animals and material.
    May be exposed to unpleasant odors and noises.

    ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
    Performs other related duties as required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Requires a high school diploma or GED. Must possess a valid driver's license. Successfully pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen. Secure/Non-Secure or higher certification through the Georgia Department of Corrections is required within the first year of employment.
    Must be available for on-call duty as assigned; including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

    Verbal Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.

    Mathematical Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.

    Functional Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

    Situational Reasoning:

    Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.


    ADA COMPLIANCE

    Physical Ability:

    Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials in excess of 50 pounds.


    Sensory Requirements:

    Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, and visual cues or signals.

    Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

    Environmental Factors:

    Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, hazardous materials, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
