Truck drivers are responsible picking up and transporting all donations from private homes, collection boxes, contributions from businesses, or other designated items.

Truck drivers must drive carefully and responsibly at all times, maintain a clean, well-kept vehicle, pick up all designated donations and/or cover every street in the designated area, and assist with the training of other drivers.

1. Drive safely and responsibly at all times. Make sure all bags are carefully inspected prior to lifting and use proper lifting techniques as outlined at the end of this job description.

  • Check all fluid levels in the truck each morning. A general inspection should be conducted each morning before leaving the premises. Report any damage to your Supervisor immediately. You will also be required to submit photographs of your truck showing damage, or lack thereof.
  • Review your route each morning before you leave. If you have questions regarding the route or the map, ask before leaving the premises. Each residence in the area you will be driving has received a card in the mail asking customers to place donated household items out for pick-up. It is imperative that EVERY house receive your attention, as every customer has been notified with a mailer card and is expecting your arrival. Customers in this area who call in are placed on a scheduled sheet which you are required to pick-up as well. Missed pick-ups or specials must receive priority attention.
  • While on the route (on the designated mapped area for pickups), drive well below the posted speed limit to ensure no items are missed.
  • Remove and maintain (from donation) all mailer cards in your truck. Do not place tape or other materials on or in truck. Mailer cards indicate how many successful pick-ups were made and failure to maintain and turn these cards in to the office will result in disciplinary action.
  • Maintain a respectable appearance. You are the only contact the customer has with the company. Your promptness, proper appearance, and exceptional manners are necessary for proper customer service and healthy public relations. Company uniforms will be issued and will be worn every day. Shirts or badges which have weathered or worn will be replaced as needed. Receipts will be left at every home who has participated. Placement of receipts in, on or around mailboxes is unacceptable and violation of federal laws.
  • Drivers WILL stack their daily loads in a neat and orderly fashion. At times the office may instruct you on specific stacking needs. Tossing or throwing items is unacceptable.
  • Maintain a clean, clutter free vehicle. You should take pride in your truck and make every effort to keep it clean and maintained; it is part of your job description to keep it that way.
  • Each driver will maintain communication with the office. In the event cellular communication is broken, telephone in periodically via collect call or otherwise to ensure route completion.
  • Maintain all reports and paperwork accurately, legibly, and as instructed.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of trucks. Assist other drivers with the loading and unloading of trucks and or the completion of their route.
  • Report all accidents and/or moving violations to the office immediately, and call the police if injuries have occurred. Obey all traffic laws. Pay specific attention to speed limits in residential areas and school zones.

  • Follow all rules and requirements of local Department of Transportation including weight stations as required by law.
