    Description

    St. Mark's School of Texas seeks an energetic and dynamic educator to teach Science 7: Earth & Space Science starting in the school year. Science 7 is a yearlong course that covers geology, meteorology, and astronomy in some depth while teaching scientific thinking, practical skills, and laboratory habits. The primary responsibility of this position would be teaching four sections of Science 7, though the strongest candidates would be able to fulfill additional or alternate teaching assignments within the science curriculum, including within the Upper School. Depending on the experience of the candidate, oversight and direction of the Arthur Douglas Greenhouse—an active, 3000 ft 2 , 3-biome facility—may be considered as an additional opportunity in connection with this position.

    Candidates should have a bachelor's degree or higher in geology or a related field of earth science and have experience teaching these subjects at the upper school or advanced middle school level. The ideal candidate would also have field experience in geology or another branch of earth science. St. Mark's students are eager and motivated learners, and the science courses are based upon frequent laboratory experiences, so a strong candidate will be able to design and conduct laboratory activities, teach with an engaging classroom style, and appeal to the learning styles of a diverse and extremely talented group of boys. He or she should have a desire to participate enthusiastically in the various activities that occur outside of the classroom in an independent school community. Likewise, he or she should demonstrate a commitment to character and leadership education for all boys, giving equal priority to their character and intellectual development.

    Responsibilities

    • Teach four sections of Science 7: Earth & Space Science
    • Utilize the St. Mark's Planetarium during the astronomy portion of Science 7
    • Serve as an Advisor to a small group of boys
    • Contribute to the school community by participating in the wilderness program, athletic program, or club program, depending on experience
    • Participate in the character and leadership education program
    • Dependent upon candidate experience, oversee and direct activity in the Arthur Douglas Greenhouse Experience / Qualifications & Skills
      • A bachelor's degree or higher in geology or other branch of earth science; field experience is a plus.
      • Five or more years teaching earth science at the advanced middle school or upper school level; independent school experience is a plus.
      • Knowledge of varied teaching strategies and fluency with a variety of technology tools to differentiate and advance learning
