UH: Pathology Lab (Unscheduled, Day Shift)

Job Summary:The Medical Lab Assistant-Cyto receives, accesses and processes all cytology and histology specimens including data entry into the laboratory information system. Performs specimen preparation by operating technical instruments for slide preparation, monolayer techniques, staining, and following standard operating procedures for patient testing, quality control, and safety requirements. Has the knowledge, ability, and technical skills to perform all duties in cyto and histo preparation, equipment maintenance and maintain quality assurance. Serves as a resource, preceptor, and mentor on all preparatory techniques. Assists, prepares, and processes all FNA procedures and instructs cytotechnology students on cyto-preparatory techniques. Performs blood collection by phlebotomy and capillary puncture in a safe, accurate and professional manner. Monitors patients for unexpected reactions and responds to emergency situations as required. Performs collections on all age groups and degrees of difficulty. These services may be provided for both the LLUMC and LLUCH hospitals. Performs other duties as needed.


Education and Experience:
Associate's degree and/or completion of Medical Assistant training from an accredited school preferred.

Minimum of two years of experience in high complexity clinical laboratory in pathology/histology, specimen collection, processing and/or testing and computer data entry required.


Knowledge and Skills:

Excellent analytic skills; excellent ability to plan and organize technical work and manage projects; clear speaking abilities; operating equipment; imputing data/typing.

Excellent dexterity. Excellent verbal and written skills in English. Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills. Cooperates harmoniously with others and shares information in a timely and appropriate manner. Demonstrates the ability to respond positively to changing circumstances to maximize the opportunity and minimize the problem. Interacts with all types of patients and visitors in a pleasant, efficient, and cooperative manner. Exhibits patient and /or customer focus including treating patient and/or customer service as a top priority. Demonstrated history of increasing responsibility.


Licensures and Certifications:
State of California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I required. American Heart Association BLS (Basic Life Support) for Healthcare Providers Certification required. Medical Assistant Certification preferred. Valid driver's license required at time of hire.
