Job Summary and Qualifications:

The Radiation Oncology RN functions as an integral member of the radiation oncology team.

The team provides patient care and supportive services that are directed towards achievement of patient care outcomes through the integrated skills of all team members in the department.

The Radiation Oncology RN, as a member of the team, is responsible for assessing and providing the appropriate nursing intervention for the actual and potential problems that the patient and family may experience related to the disease process, treatment course and follow-up period.

This role includes the teaching, counselling and support functions needed to assist the patient and family to cope with and adjust to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.


  • Functions independently and interdependently with the radiation oncology team in providing quality patient care.
  • Provides clinical care, nursing consultation and education as it relates to oncology care and radiation therapy delivery.
  • Provides assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation and evaluation, focusing on the continuum of care to support the patients receiving radiotherapy, their families and caregivers.
  • Participates in leadership roles of clinician, educator, consultant, and/or researcher.
  • Collaborates and consults with patient and family, along with the multidisciplinary team, to enhance desired clinical outcomes.
  • Communicates to the Radiation oncologist any significant alteration in patient's status and carries out nursing action plan to resolve the problem.
  • Works in clinic as part of nursing team to help coordinate the flow and care of the radiation oncology patients.
  • Assists with patient/family/significant other's learning needs, abilities and readiness to learn. Identifies barriers to learning, such as language or culture. Integrates this information into the patient's plan of care.
  • Identifies and documents the patient, family and/or caregivers education needs in collaboration with other disciplines and implements an ongoing education relevant to these needs.
  • Explains tests, procedures, disease processes, medications and equipment to patient and family throughout the course of treatment.

What qualifications you will need:


  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Registered Nurse
  • Associate Degree
  • Over 3 years' experience preferred
  • OCN Certification
