Background
Safe Harbor is currently funded by a grant from DuPage County and other lesser sources.

It receives donations of toys, books and equipment from various community sources which the Executive Director must review and approve before use.


Qualifications:


  • 21 years of age and High School diploma or GED
  • Five years or more of childcare experience or training and a positive attitude and be able to manage assistant and volunteer workers.
  • Certification in CPR for Children and Infants.
  • Must be able to sit, stand and walk frequently and be able to lift 30 lbs.
  • Must have full use of hands and arms and be able to feel and reach.
  • Must possess the ability to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, crawl as needed to care for young children.
  • Must enjoy working with children and engaging with them through conversation and play.
  • Must be able to see, smell and hear.
  • The Executive Director and all employees and volunteers will be fingerprinted and processed by the Sheriff's department before they are allowed to work. Records of same are to be kept.
  • Must keep protocol notebook and make sure it is kept current.

Work Environment:

The employees are frequently exposed to small children and toys. Occasionally the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts.

The noise levels vary depending on the number and ages of the children in the room.


Duties:


  • Responsible for overseeing all aspects of the operation of the room which operates on all court dates from 8:00 AM to close (usually 4 PM if there are no children left in the room). Safe Harbor is closed from Noon to 1 PM daily, except in the case of children not picked up.
  • Ensure that all users of Safe Harbor, which is a diverse community, are treated with respect and that the reason that they are using the room is kept confidential to the best extent possible.
  • Responsible for ensuring the scheduling of staff for the room, which would be the Executive Director, assistants to the Executive Director and varying number of volunteers based on assessment of needs by the Executive Director. Safe Harbor has three employees (including the Executive Director) and a varying number of volunteers. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing staff.
  • Be familiar with all courthouse emergency procedures.
  • Be familiar with required protocols in instances where persons who dropped off a child are taken into custody, or other emergency (e.g., fire alarms or other evacuation of the building).
  • Ensure that the notification systems in place to communicate with people dropping off children are working and updated if necessary.
  • Be familiar with computer use and interface with the court to verify courthouse use by persons using the room.
  • Computers for Safe Harbor are only to be used for Safe Harbor Use. No personal use.
  • Protocols and computer use are only for employees and not for Volunteers. Passwords are to be kept secured and limited to employees and not volunteers.
  • Keep a list of current contacts for operation including the Sheriff' s contact personnel, Chief Judge's office and the President of the Foundation, housekeeping needs, County IT department etc.
  • Prepare all reports required (daily, weekly, biweekly monthly, annual) and keep electronic copies and others as needed.
  • Send Monthly and Annual Reports to CFCF Board members, Chief Judge, State's Attorney, Public Defender, Sheriff, DuPage County Bar Association and DuPage Association of Women Lawyers.
  • Contact and cultivate sources for volunteers or donors of goods or services to Safe Harbor. (e.g., toys, books, equipment etc.)
  • Timely prepare time sheets and process as directed by the CFCF Treasurer.
  • Keep room supplied as necessary.
  • Maintain historical records of CFCF.
  • Review and update procedures regularly and recommend Action Items to the Foundation Board as necessary.
  • Arrange for recognition awards to the Board for volunteer of the Year and the Above and Beyond award annually.
  • Organize and get Board Approval for an annual volunteer appreciation lunch.
  • Notify the President of the Foundation whenever an issue needs attention or arises, and time off schedules.
  • Attend Board Meetings as required.

This position is an At-Will employment position, meaning that the position can be terminated at any time for any reason or no reason, except an illegal one.

Benefits:


  • Hourly pay at the rate of $25. Paid based on a 40hour week. 52 Weeks per year (this included the below Paid Time Off)
  • Two weeks of Paid Time Off are provided for personal use.
  • SEP Retirement funding: After six (6) months of employment, an amount equal to 8% of gross wages is contributed to a SEP account established for the employee. The beginning date is the first day of the first fiscal quarter following the employee's six (6) month anniversary of employment. Contributions are made quarterly and held at Edward Jones.
