Description
Bay Area Pet Adoptions has an opening for a full-time/part-time Kennel Technician. Availability to work weekends and holidays is required.


The Kennel Technician provides quality care to the animals at Bay Area Pet Adoptions - non-profit, no-kill animal shelter located in Galveston County.


This position includes but is not limited to:

  • Keeping the kennels, yards and facility grounds clean, cleaning the kennel buildings, laundry, proper feeding, walking and socializing dogs, canine enrichment, medicating and/or monitoring sick and injured animals, transporting pets to/from appointments or events, providing quality care for all of our shelter animals, in addition to assisting with adoption counseling and communicating with the public. Cross-training for coverage of other positions may also apply.
Organizational skills, a positive outlook and strong communication skills are required. Must be comfortable working with all sizes, breeds and temperaments of dogs.


REQUIREMENTS:


  • A valid drivers license is required.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Possess strong communication skills.
  • Possess a respectful attitude and positive outlook even during busy workload.
  • Ability to be productive, efficient, and respectful during high stress periods.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a TEAM.
  • Willingness to learn and ability to retain information taught.
  • Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures.
  • Ability to take direction and constructive criticism well.
  • Must be reliable and show up to work, ready to work.
  • Must be available to work holidays and weekends.
Experience working in an animal care environment is required.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
  • Report signs of illness, disease, weight loss, injury or unusual activity immediately.
  • Handle animals as required and restrain animals appropriately.
  • Ensure that kennels and animals are properly identified on both sides of the kennels.
  • Clean, disinfect and maintain kennels and play yards daily and as often as is necessary to ensure no kennels or yards are soiled and odors are not apparent.
  • Perform general cleaning in other areas of the facility to control the spread of disease.
  • Wash and sterilize water and food bowls.
  • Launder and dry towels and blankets.
  • Patrol facility grounds daily, picking up any trash and stool material. Empty trash, making sure that the facility is always "tourready".
  • Keep kennels areas and building clean and organized.
  • Work well with all employees and volunteers and ensure that your actions support Bay Area Pet Adoptions and our mission. Be respectful.
  • Transport animals to appointments as needed.
  • Assist with adoption counseling as needed.
  • Cross training for other positions may also apply.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Ability to gain animal confidence when restraining them for transport, grooming and/or treatment.
  • Ability to perform moderately heavy physical labor.
  • Knowledge of Bay Area Pet Adoptions principles and processes for providing a potential adopter knowledge about the animal's needs and behaviors.
  • Knowledge of dog body language, vaccinations, spay/neuter and heartworm prevention.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments. Understand and carry out oral and written direction.
  • Be Pro-Active.

PHYSICAL EFFORT


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job.


  • Frequently required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, communicate, and listen, frequently working in a bent position.
  • Frequently use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; will reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently on your feet for the majority of the day.
  • Use strength or agility in capturing and restraining stronger, more active animals.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasionally handle dogs weighing up to and over 150 lbs. Assistance will be provided by animal handlers when working with larger animals.

WORK ENVIRONMENT


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with dogs and cats of all sizes, breeds and temperaments; exposure to unpleasant odors and loud noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; and possible exposure to contagious diseases.


Pay:
$9.00 - $11.00 per hour
