The Transit Operations Manager supervises Bus Operators and administrative/dispatch staff for the VTA on Martha's Vineyard Island, which includes the fixed routes as well as the LIFT paratransit routes.
This is a unique transit system and requires ahands-on working style.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees the daytoday operation services, ensuring transportation is safe, efficient, and cost effective.
- Holds operations staff and operators accountable through open communication, employee participation, and performance management.
- Prepare and submit weekly payroll figures and reports as well as ensuring accurate recordkeeping while updating operator Fringe Benefit data.
- Maintain operator records, ensuring all required licensing, testing, and documentation is current.
- Aide in Controlled Substance and Alcohol Policy administration / Schedule operators for preemployment & ongoing random testing screenings
- Roster Operators / Oversee Work Bid selections.
- Prepare essential documentation, including driver "paddles", work schedules, passenger route information, onboard literature.
- Organize required operator training schedules, handbooks, and training manuals.
- Prepare Incident & Accident reports / Logs for Operational Anomalies, Weather Conditions, Farebox Problems, Passenger Complaints, Service Suggestions, etc.
- Generate and Proof Driver "Paddles", Service Maps, Departure Sheets, etc.
- Dispatch Fleet / Head-Way service operations.
- Maintains a strong relationship with the labor union as well as participates in labor relations, including administering discipline and facilitating the grievance process.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Valid state Driver's License. Having a CDL with passenger endorsement is a plus
- Three (3) years of leadership experience. Management role in a transit and/or union environment with motivation, support, and development of direct reports is preferred.
- Must have an "All Handson Deck" work attitude and management approach.
- Experience with working with unionized staff and CBA is preferred.
- Must have a faultless criminal record and safe driving record.
- Able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, build morale, motivate personnel, promote team effectiveness, diffuse conflicts, negotiate common solutions to differences of opinion.
- Capable of carrying out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner
- Able to prioritize and deal with multiple tasks, analyze complex issues and make sound decisions.
- Be/Become familiar with major and secondary roads found on Martha's Vineyard.
- Effectively and efficiently reroute vehicles in case of accidents or road closures.
- Be able to adapt to everchanging challenges and learn quickly.
