Position Description
Working on the mechanical aspect of our whale science tag that contains a camera, hydrophone arrays, GPS, IMU, and other sensors while maximizing adhesion with suction cups and being robust to ocean depths of up to 2,000 meters.
Build, improve and maintain various drones that will be used during the CETI missions such as whale tag deployments and recoveries.
EEO Statement
We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions, or any other characteristic protected by law.
The Harvard John A.
Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks a Mechanical Engineer to help us with an audacious project - communicating with whales.
As part of Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), a project funded by TED, we are designing whale tags and deployment systems to decipher the communication of whales.
We are designing whale tags loaded with sensors to measure depth, movement, light, and sound while sticking to the whales (using suction cups).
These tags will be deployed and recovered with a network of autonomous drones to families of well-studied whales in the Caribbean.
The data we collect then gets analyzed by world-class machine learning researchers.Cetacean Translation Initiative:
a roadmap to deciphering the communication of sperm whales
An ideal candidate will have an interest in everything from flying drones to designing and improving whale tags that will survive punishing ocean depths of up to 2000 meters.
You will work with an interdisciplinary team of engineers and researchers at the Harvard Microrobotics Lab, and coordinate with external collaborators such as Google.
Candidates must have experience using CAD (preferably Autodesk Fusion 360), ideally with experience rapidly iterating on parts with 3D printers.
We have some amount of field testing, and depending on the candidate's performance and projects there is a possibility of field testing in the Caribbean.
NOTE:
The Mechanical Engineer will work on campus full-time at our new Science and Engineering Complex (SEC) in Allston, MA and will potentially travel with the team for onsite research outside of the U.S.
